I Appreciate

LP (Item 32873) MCA, 1984 — Condition: Sealed
A stone classic from Alicia Myers – one of her classic sets recorded during the MCA years of the mighty One Way empire! By this point in the 80s, Myers was just about the only part of Al Hudson's One Way collective that was still running strong – and this album of smooth modern soul tracks shows that she still had plenty of steam – stepping out strongly as a lead act on her own, with a vibe that was equally great on mellow tracks and upbeat groovers! The record was produced by Kevin McCord, who also wrote a number of nice tracks – and Al Hudson checks in on writing credits on a few numbers, too. Titles include the sweetly smooth "Don't Do Me This Way", which has a nice jazzy tip – plus "Say That", "You Get The Best From Me", "Just Can't Stay Away", and "Appreciation".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Dramatics

10 1/2
MCA, 1980. Sealed
The Dramatics hit an 80s groove mood here – and as on their clubbier sides from the end of the 70s, the vocals are still wonderful – and more than anything, the set's a strong soul-based set that still has the group at the top of their game! Ballads actually sparkle the best here ... LP, Vinyl record album

New Edition

Under The Blue Moon
MCA, 1986. Sealed
New Edition show they're no Johnnies-come-lately on the harmony soul scene – and pay tribute to a host of older groups from the 50s and 70s – singing a mix of hits and soul classics in a laidback late nite mode that brings a real focus on their vocals. Given their age, there's a sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rufus & Chaka

Masterjam
MCA, 1979. Sealed Gatefold
A definite masterjam from Chaka Khan and Rufus – one of the group's last key efforts together – produced to perfection by the mighty Quincy Jones! MCA, 1979. Sealed
Smooth stepping grooves from The Floaters – still very much in the nicely compressed mode of their more famous debut, and getting some nice production help here from Eugene McDaniels! Wilson Pickett

Best Of Wilson Pickett
Atlantic, Late 60s. Very Good+
Hard heavy soul from The Wicked Pickett – and virtually a blueprint for the heavier sound of Muscle Shoals to come – as Wilson Pickett was to that soul scene what Otis Redding had been to the Memphis world of Stax Records! These aren't Wilson's first recordings – but as with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Volt, 1965. Very Good+
Otis Redding Sings Soul – plenty of truth in that – but on this sweet little set, he somehow does it even better than before! Lou Rawls

Too Much!
Capitol, 1967. Very Good+
One of the great ones – produced by David Axelrod, with HB Barnum arrangements, and sublime vocals by Lou, who's really at his best in this sort of setting! The album features 2 hip monologues – "Righteous Woman" and "Dead End Street" – plus the famous sung ... LP, Vinyl record album
