Into Something (Can't Shake Loose)

LP (Item 32862) Hi Records, 1977 — Condition: Very Good
A stone killer from OV Wright – a record that's got all the raw, deeply soulful vocals we love in his early work – mixed with some wicked 70s Hi Records production from Willie Mitchell! Imagine an Al Green record, but with rawer vocals, and you've got a good idea of the feel of this one – a perfect setting for OV's massive talent, and a great way for him to reach out to a wider audience too! The sound is impeccable – about as classic as you can get for Hi – and titles include a number of great Willie Mitchell originals – including "I Feel Love Growin", "The Time We Have", and "You Gotta Have Love". The set also includes a nice version of "Trying To Live My Life Without You", too!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some ring and edge wear, split top seam, and a center split in the bottom seam.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Hi Records, Late 60s. Very Good+
What a strange one! The title says "Willie Mitchell Live", but then the back says "All tracks previously released on Hi Records." Clearly, the Memphis bunch are knob-twiddling here, and adding fake applause to some of Willie's better instrumental moments from the old days. ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hi Records, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Funky Willie Mitchell at his best – "hit sound" to be sure, but one that still has plenty of grit in the grooves! The record's one from that stretch when Willie was working in a style that was more funky 45 than anything else – trumpet-heavy instrumentals that seem to take ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hi Records, 1975. Very Good+
What can we say? Most of the biggest hits, and many of the very best tracks cut in the prime of Al Green's career – which is to say some of the very best Memphis soul ever recorded! 10 essential tracks in all, and it's just one of these Greatest Hits packages of pure, inarguable perection ... Al Green

Al Green Is Love
Hi Records, 1975. Sealed
Heavenly soul doesn't get any more heavenly than this! Al Green's at the height of his powers here – working in that wonderfully smooth, wonderfully warm style that made his early 70s material so wonderful! This album's maybe slightly less iconic than some of Green's other titles for Hi ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hi Records, 1960. Very Good+
Very early grooves from Willie Mitchell – a set that's got a bit more R&B than in Willie's later years – with less trumpet in the mix, and more of an overall punch in the rhythms! Guitar is quite strong on most of these instrumentals – and there's some nice tenor, too – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Ruffin

Groove Governor
SOUL, 1970. Very Good
One of those Motown treasures that would have been a runaway hit, were it issued on a label with less going on – but which somehow got lost amidst the shuffle of all the other Motor City greatness of the time! Don't let obscurity make you think that Jimmy Ruffin's not giving his best, though ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sam Cooke

Try A Little Love
RCA, 1965. Very Good
Released shortly after Sam's death, this is a beautiful batch of ballad tracks to remember how sweet his voice was. The production's a bit pop, but Sam's singing is as heavenly as ever. Titles include "When A Boy Falls In Love", "Try A Little Love", "Bridge Of Tears" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Maxine Weldon

Some Singin'
Monument, 1974. Very Good
Sophisticated country soul – almost to southern soul what Marlena Shaw's early 70s work was to northern soul. Bill Justis handled the arrangements, but it's Maxine's adult handling of the material that makes tracks like "Born To Love Me", "Going Where I've Been", "Lov ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, Late 50s. Very Good
A classic album of Atlantic R&B – issued soon after the tragic early death of the great Chuck Willis! The record includes a chilling photo of Willis' gravestone on the cover – and includes a wonderful sampling of his excellent material for Atlantic, stuff that can often get ... Wilbert Harrison

Wilbert Harrison
Buddah, 1971. Very Good
Wilbert's come a long way from Kansas City here – working with Marshall Sehorn on a set of southern-tinged arrangements, mostly of older R&B classics, done in a hipper crossover 70s mode that also has a bit of New Orleans funk! Allen Toussaint arranged the horns, which probably helps in ... LP, Vinyl record album
