But Beautiful

LP (Item 3285) Milestone, Late 50s/1976 — Condition: Very Good+
2LP Gatefold
Nice 2 LP collection of some of Kenny Dorham's beautiful lyrical trumpet work for the Riverside label from the late 50s. The set features material from the albums Jazz Contrasts, Two Horns/Two Rhythms, Blue Spring, and This Is The Moment – plus one track from Abbey Lincoln's album That's Him. The focus is largely on Dorham's sweeter moments, and the set features a host of great original compositions by him, including "Poetic", "Spring Cannon", "La Villa", and "Blue Spring". There's a good set of notes, too, which were written not too long after Dorham's early death in 1972.  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has ring & edge wear, a promo stamp, trace of a sticker, and track notes in pen.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Blue Note, 1956. Near Mint-
One of our favorite albums ever by Kenny Dorham – and a really different session than his usual studio work! The album captures Kenny in a relaxed live setting, with a bit more dirt on his horn than usual – blowing with a tone that's much more open and a bit less poised – in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kenny Dorham

Trompeta Toccata
Blue Note, 1964. Sealed
A wonderfully free-thinking set by Kenny Dorham – and a record that really breaks from his earlier work! The album's not exactly experimental, but it features longer tracks with a looser approach than some of Dorham's sweeter shorter work – more in a rhythmically progressive mode that ... Kenny Dorham

Una Mas
Blue Note, 1963. Near Mint-
An excellent groover from Kenny Dorham – possibly one of his best ever albums for Blue Note – a record that shows how much he was pushing past his bop roots in his later years! The tracks are extremely long, and done with a complexity in rhythms that mixes Latin elements with hardbop ... LP, Vinyl record album

McCoy Tyner

Trident
Milestone, 1975. Near Mint-
A nice 70s trio side with Tyner's lyrical, spiraling piano lines nicely underpinned by Elvin Jones' polyrhythms and Ron Carter's supple bass. Three Tyner originals: "Celestial Chant", "Elvin (Sir) Jones" and "Land Of The Lonely", plus Trane's "Impressions", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Double Image
Moon (France), 1969. Near Mint- 2LP
Mind blowing! This is a 2 LP version of a live set from 1969, recorded in Paris with Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, and Jack DeJohnette. The sound on here is crazy, and goes waaaay out – farther out than anything we've ever heard by Miles. At times, the tracks break down ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1960. Sealed
A landmark album – not only for Freddie Redd, but for Jackie McLean, who's the real star of the session! In the early 60s, both Freddie and Jackie played together in a hip New York play called The Connection – working as a part of a live jazz band who were hanging out in an apartment, ... Gary McFarland

Point Of Departure
Impulse, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great record – and one that's filled with so many wonderful little moments! The whole thing's a very cool, very off-beat set of jazz tracks recorded by vibist Gary McFarland, with a group that includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Richie Kamuca on tenor, and Steve Swallow on bass – a ... Jackie McLean

Consequence
Blue Note, 1965/1979. Near Mint-
A great slice from Jackie McLean's rare unissued 60s sessions for Blue Note – a rollingly soulful session that stands in stark contrast to some of his more modern sides of the time! The set's got Jackie working with a group that includes Lee Morgan on trumpet and Harold Mabern on piano ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Kind Of Blue
Columbia, 1959. Very Good
What can we say? This is the ultimate Miles Davis album – the one that includes so many songs that we've heard way too much in Starbucks, in retail stores, or at a friend's house who claims to be a "jazz expert", but is really a yuppie dilettante. Yet somehow, over all the years, ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Love Supreme
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
Maybe one of the greatest jazz albums of all time – a real breakthrough moment for the legendary John Coltrane, and the blueprint for generations of jazz records to come! Trane was already breaking down plenty of boundaries before Love Supreme – but he knocked it out of the park for ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Timmons

Little Barefoot Soul
Prestige, 1964. Very Good
Killer trio work from pianist Bobby Timmons – a set that opens up with a lot more fire and freedom than some of his earlier dates for Riverside! When Timmons made the shift to Prestige, something really clicked in his playing – a new sense of energy, rhythm, and space that's all heard ... LP, Vinyl record album
