Great stuff! Tania Maria's first few years recording in the US were some of her best – and this excellent groover on Picante features some very tight Brazilian jazz tracks, cut with a small combo of west coasters, and produced by Cal Tjader with a smooth jazzy vibe. The overall sound is nicely stripped-down, and the main focus is on Tania's soulful voice and piano. Titles include "Lemon Cuica", "Chiclete Com Banana", "Yatra Ta", "Comecar De Novo", and "Super Happy". (Cover has a cutout hole and a small spot from sticker removal.)  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A real classic from Sergio Mendes – probably most famous for its funky bits! Great Arrival
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Sergio Mendes' most dreamy albums – quite different than both his vocal work with Brasil 66, and his smaller combo sides from Brazil! There's still a strong bossa component to the record – but the setting has Sergio's piano lines laid out over larger arrangements with a good ... LP, Vinyl record album

Black Smith
Pride, 1974. Very Good
A record that's way way different than the sound of Jimmy Smith Blue Note work – and a much-loved set by fans of 70s funk! Jimmy's organ is still very strongly out front of the arrangements – but it's soaring over the top of grooves done by Jerry Peters and Michael "Incredible ... LP, Vinyl record album

Other Road
Fania, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
Ray Barretto's definitely going down different road here – and sounding amazingly great in the process! The debut of a genius group that would forever transform the sound of electric jazz in the 80s – and a brilliant set that few others could match at the time!
