Roots Of Rock N Roll

LP (Item 32662) Savoy, 1950s — Condition: Very Good
2LP Gatefold
Just Sold Out!

LP, Vinyl record album

❔

2LP set that brings together early R&B sides recorded for the Savoy label – not really rock and roll as the title might imply, but a good set of cuts that's sort of an overview of the label's classic hits in the pre-soul universe! Includes the sublime "Bad Boy" by The Jive Bombers, plus "Misery", "Lost In A Dream", and "Head Hunter" by Johnny Otis; "Hot Rod" and "Cornbread" by Hal Singer; "Marie", "Count Every Star", and "Old Man River" by The Ravens; "Candy" and "Mean To Me" by Big Maybelle, and "The Hucklebuck" by Paul Williams. Lots more obscure stuff, too – and a good set of notes!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Savoy, 1950s/1979. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Great set of rare doo wop and R&B vocal group recordings from the Savoy label – most of which were only ever issued on super-rare 45s and 78s! The set includes loads of material, 32 tracks in all, including "Poor Butterfly" and "Milk Shake Stand" by The Three Barons, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tyrone Davis

In The Mood
Columbia, 1979. Very Good
Our favorite album ever from Tyrone Davis – even if it's completely different than most of his other work too! The set's got a wonderfully smooth feel right from the start – a mellow-grooving, slow-stepping approach that works perfectly for Tyrone's wonderful vocals – pushing ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, 1974. Very Good+
A stone classic from Bobby Womack – one of those records that has all his best elements firmly in place, put forward at a level that's sophisticated and polished, yet never too commercial at all! Bobby's voices are still incredible – that raspy, personal feel that's rooted in country ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Scott-Heron

Reflections
Arista, 1981. Very Good-
A great little album that's often overshadowed by its hit – the 15 minute "B-Movie", which was sort of an overly-wrought protest piece about how the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 was going to turn America into a bad b-movie. Not that that track's bad – although its ... LP, Vinyl record album
Curtom, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
Quite possibly our favorite-ever album by the Impressions! The record is a key transitional one – and it has them opening up the politics that were often hidden by spiritual metaphors on earlier ABC albums, into a righteous soul groove that hints a lot at the overblown direction Curtis ... Cymande

Cymande
Janus, 1972. Very Good Gatefold
The fantastic first album by one of the most unique funk groups of all time! A key part of the crumbling British colonial network that produced some excellent music in the postwar years, Cymande was comprised mostly of West Indians who'd emigrated to England in the 60s, eventually meeting up ... Atlantic, 1968. Very Good-
Heavenly soul from the lovely Sweet Inspirations! The record was the group's first secular album for Atlantic – after recording one gospel album, and doing the backings on a number of fine Aretha Franklin sessions – and it's a gem of a female soul record, with the same classic sound ... Blue Thumb, 1977. Very Good
One of the greatest albums of all time – a masterpiece of moody soul, spacey vocals, and jazzy vibes – all produced by the legendary Roy Ayers! Ramp take their name from the anagram Roy Ayers Musical Productions – and in a way, the group's the summation of all the genius that Roy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gemini

Gemini Rising
M&M, 1981. Very Good-
A classic boogie groover from the early 80s – the one and only album from Gemini, and one of the few albums issued on the tiny M&M label! Although an indie effort, the album's got a tightness that matches the best 80s groove on bigger labels from the time – especially the excellent ... LP, Vinyl record album

Undisputed Truth

Cosmic Truth
Gordy, 1975. Very Good- Gatefold
A fantastic 70s album from Undisputed Truth – and the first to fully feature the new version of the lineup, after the Magictones had been recruited to form the second version of the group! The sound here is even funkier and more guitar-based than before – a fully-realized take on the ... LP, Vinyl record album
