Third World

LP (Item 32308) TCB, Early 70s — Condition: Very Good+
Early 70s issue of a record recorded for the Warwick label in the early 60s – mostly led by Curtis Fuller, and under the name Soul Of Jazz Percussion. The record is a strange batch of soul jazz tracks that features a number of different groups with players like Fuller, Waldron, Little, Donald Byrd, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, Pepper Adams, and others – all playing soul jazz tracks with lots of added percussion. The percussion takes the form (mostly) of booming drumming which augments the deep grooves of the tracks. Most of the tracks on this one have been pulled together to emphasize the sound of the trumpeters – and tracks include "Ping Pong", "November Afternoon", "Call to Arms", and "Wee Tina".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Red Rodney

Red Rodney Returns
Argo, Late 50s. Very Good
One of the great albums that Red Rodney recorded on his comeback in the late 50's, and one that features the great Philadelphia tenor player Billy Root. Root's playing is one of the highlights of this LP, and the tracks include "5709", "Red Hot and Blue", "Whirlwind", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jack McDuff

Check This Out
Cadet, 1972. Very Good+
A great Chess Records session from organist Jack McDuff – a set that also features great work on saxes from Red Holloway, Leo Johnson, and David Young – working with jack on a club date in the Bay Area! The vibe is great – very much as groovy and unusual as some of McDuff's Blue ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1964. Very Good
A well-titled session – given the strong early groove of organist Don Patterson! At a time when some of his contemporaries were tightening things up on the Hammond, going for shorter tunes aimed at the jukebox and radio crowd, Don Patterson was a great reminder that the organ was best used ... Coleman Hawkins

Gilded Hawk
Capitol, Mid 50s. Very Good-
Tremendous work from Coleman Hawkins – a sublime "with strings" session from the 50s, and one of Bean's greatest albums from the decade! The setting is quite different than other sets with Hawk on tenor – soft strings from Glen Osser, cascading beautifully and gently – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Klaus Doldinger

Doldinger In South America
EmArcy, 1965. Near Mint-
An excellent album – possibly the best by German saxophonist Klaus Doldinger! The album's got a wonderful Latiny groove – played by a group that includes Attila Zoller on guitar and Ingfried Hoffman on organ and piano. Hoffman's sound is wonderful – very groovy, and a perfect ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1952. Very Good
Lester Young joins the Oscar Peterson trio – and the result is a classic meeting of the minds from early 50s Verve! Young's tone is tremendous throughout – that sharp-yet-cool style that had such a big influence on other 50s players, and which gets some great support here from Peterson' ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mercury, Mid 50s. Very Good-
Although he's best known for his vocal R&B hit "Heartbreak", Jon Thomas was also a darn good organist, and this mid 50s album for Mercury's a nice batch of sides in the same tradition as contemporaneous work by Bill Doggett and Doc Bagby. The tracks are short and lively, and Jon ... LP, Vinyl record album

Al Cohn & Zoot Sims

You N Me
Mercury, 1960. Very Good-
One of the best albums that Al Cohn and Zoot Sims ever cut together – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of their collaborations during the 50s and 60s! The set's got a nice small group feeling, and is a bit more open and relaxed than some of their RCA material – still in the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sire, 1989. Very Good
Ice T's third album, and a set that still has all the nicely biting style of his early best! The approach here is great – as political as the cover implies, but with a nice sense of wit, too – that quality that already made Ice stand so far apart from others who were getting mired down ... Scepter, 1974. Very Good Gatefold
The monumental debut of BT Express – and an excellent funk album that often gets overlooked by fans of the music because of the band's bigger fame as a disco group! This first record has the combo grooving hard and instrumentally – in the mode of a tight blacksploitation soundtrack, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eric B & Rakim

Paid In Full
4th & Broadway, 1987. Very Good
Paid In Full, indeed! Eric B & Rakim's seminal debut still pays off in so many ways, and it was such a vital link between the party rockin' style of the old school and the terse, hard-hitting beats and rhymes of the nascent school, we can't even come up with the words for the praise it's due. ... RCA, 1960. Very Good
One of the maestro's greatest! From the instruments spiraling off to infinity on the cover, to the tracks played in the unique crazy Esquivel "wah wah" style, the album stands as one of the finest examples of (and obstacle courses for) modern high fidelity – a really dynamic set of ...
