Warm Wave

LP (Item 3193) Verve, Mid 60s — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold

Warm mellow moody vibes from Cal Tjader, in a great setting for his vibes – with nice sweet orchestrations by Claus Ogerman, who gives the whole thing a nice deep Euro 60's feel! The group includes Hank Jones, Jerome Richardson & Kenny Burrell. The set's mostly ballads, with a number of standards including "I'm Old Fashioned", "The Way You Look Tonight", "Violets For Your Furs", plus a few pop tunes – and a nice Ogerman original called "Sunset Blvd".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Cal Tjader

In A Latin Bag
Verve, 1961. Very Good Gatefold
One of Cal's first albums for Verve, and a great set of Latin tracks with Lonnie Hewitt on piano, Armando Peraza on bongos, Johnny Rae on timbales, and Paul Horn on flute. The overall sound is great – and the album has a straight-on jazzy groove that makes it much better than some of Cal's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader

Primo
Fantasy, 1973. Very Good
A really hard-hitting set from Cal Tjader – and one that's done with a good dose of 60s Latin Soul as well! The album was recorded in the early 70s, but it's really got a late 60s New York flavor – thanks to arrangers Charlie Palmieri and Tito Puente – who cook up a groove that's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1975. Very Good+
Cal records a set of lush mellow ballads, but the sound is surprisingly enjoyable and soulful, thanks to some great electric piano by Frank Strazzeri and electric guitar work by Eddie Duran – both of whom give the session a very dope 70s vibe. Tracks include "A House Is Not A Home" ... LP, Vinyl record album

A 2-in-1 Latin jazz spectacular from the mighty Cal Tjader! Prophet
Verve, 1968. Very Good
One of the last albums that Cal Tjader ever cut for Verve – and it's also one of the best! Verve, 1966. Very Good+

Generation Ago Today
Verve, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
A really sweet little album from guitarist Kenny Burrell – one in which he takes older tunes ("a generation ago"), and updates them with a sweetly compressed Verve 60s groove ("today"!) The record features 2 small groups – one with Ron Carter on bass, Grady Tate on ... LP, Vinyl record album

An unusual live date for Oscar Peterson – in that it wasn't actually officially recorded by Verve, but done by a fan and handed over to Norman Granz at a later date!
