Warm Wave

LP (Item 3193) Verve, 1964 — Condition: Very Good
Gatefold
A mighty nice pairing – the vibes of Cal Tjader and the sophisticated arrangements of Claus Ogerman – who definitely ensures that the album's the warm wave promised in the title! The core group features Jerome Richardson on reeds, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Hank Jones on piano – and titles include "I'm Old Fashioned", "The Way You Look Tonight", "Violets For Your Furs", plus a few pop tunes – and a nice Ogerman original called "Sunset Blvd".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo MGM pressing.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Cal Tjader

San Francisco Moods
Fantasy, Early 60s. Near Mint-
A nice album of lyrical groovers by this master vibist – played with more of a jazz feel than Cal's 60's Latin sessions – and it's based around a nice set of original tracks dedicated to San Francisco. Bay Area guitar legend Eddie Duran plays with Cal's group on the session, and titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader

West Side Story
Fantasy, Early 60s. Very Good+
A really great reading of the West Side Story score – one that's better than most of the other ones floating around from the time! Of course, part of the reason for that is because the session's got some super-hip scoring from the great Clare Fischer – just starting out here, but doing ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1958. Very Good
One of Cal Tjader's best late 50s dates for Fantasy Records – thanks to some smoking tenor sax from Jose "Chombo" Silva! The album has Cal working in the very comfortable territory of San Francisco's Blackhawk Nightclub – in a combo that also features familiar players Vince ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader

Soul Sauce
Verve, 1964. Very Good+
Arguably THE classic Cal Tjader album of the 60s – a landmark album that crossed over equally into Latin, jazz, and mainstream audiences – and a stone cooker that's filled with smoking little grooves! The set's probably best known for its title track "Soul Sauce" – one ... LP, Vinyl record album

Best Of Cal Tjader
Verve, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Cal cut so many great sides for Verve during the 60s, it's hard to imagine how anyone could come up with a "best of" – but this album fits the bill nicely, and includes a number of solid groover and Latin jazz tracks that fit just right! Includes "Sake & Greens", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lionel Hampton

Hamp's Big Four
Verve, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
Although Lionel Hampton's always best remembered for his storming swing days in the early 40s, we love him on records like this one – an easy open-ended straight jazz session from the 50s, with lots of room for soloing in a much more jazz-oriented vein than you'll hear on Hamp's early records. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roy Eldridge

Rockin Chair
Verve, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
A nice little session that features Roy with an expanded group – a core combo that features Oscar Peterson on organ and piano, Buddy Tate on tenor, Ray Brown on bass, and Barney Kessel on guitar, plus a larger set of string backings by George Williams. Tracks are short, with mostly solos by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lee Konitz

Motion
Verve, 1961. Near Mint- Gatefold
A pivotal album in the career of Lee Konitz – and one that shows him really stretching out, past his tightly arranged style of the 50s! Lee's working here in a fairly free trio setting – backed by only Sonny Dallas on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. Jones plays loosely and openly on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Evans & Jim Hall

Intermodulation
Verve, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
A magnificent follow up to the Undercurrent album from the team of Bill Evans and Jim Hall – and like that one, a set that features amazing interplay between piano and guitar! Hall's guitar has never sounded better – and in the airy company of Evans, it takes on many of the same ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Early 50s. Near Mint-
A classic 50s collection of Verve material by Charlie Parker – and one of those records that will definitely help you understand his genius right from the start! The lineup here is slightly large – wonderful arrangements by Joe Lipman that are a bit orchestral, with strings as well ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto

Getz/Gilberto (Original Master Recording)
Mobile Fidelity/Verve, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
A landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy & Wes – The Dynamic Duo
Verve, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
A really wonderful album in the Verve Records catalog of the 60s – a set that's not only a fantastic meeting between two superstar jazz musicians, with Jimmy Smith on Hammond and Wes Montgomery on guitar – but one that also takes things in a whole groovy new dimension, thanks to the ...
