Handle With Care

LP (Item 31853) Atlantic, 1962 — Condition: Very Good+

Great work by this legendary hard swinging band – an early 60s American album issued on Atlantic Records, in the years before the Clark Boland Band's legendary run on MPS! Despite the early date, the album's got all the core elements of the band's sound in place – soaring rhythms, sharp-edged frontlines, and some great solo work by players who include Benny Bailey, Derek Humble, Jimmy Woode, Shahib Shihab, Idrees Sulieman, and Fats Sadi – coming together in a brilliant trans-Atlantic meeting of jazz talents! Tracks include "Long Note Blues", "Speedy Reeds", "Sonor", and "Om Mani Padme Hum".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Red & purple label pressing.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Clarke Boland Big Band

All Blues
MPS, 1969. Near Mint-
An excellent Clarke Boland Big Band LP – very much in the spirit of the group's best work of the era – one that uses the blues of the title merely as springboard for their ebullient big band groove! The album featuring a stellar array of soloists, including Tony Coe on clarinet, Sahib ... LP, Vinyl record album

Nat Adderley

Live At Memory Lane
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good Gatefold
Nice hard swingin' quintet session, with a good late 60's groove. Nat Adderley borrows brother Cannonball's pianist Joe Zawinul, and Joe Henderson sits in on tenor. The set was recorded live, with the same sort of relaxed funky groove as the Cannonball live sets from the time. Cuts include " ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Giuffre

Western Suite
Atlantic, 1957. Sealed
One of the best-ever Jimmy Giuffre albums! Jimmy's playing here in his classic piano-less trio format, in a group with Jim Hall on guitar and Bob Brookmeyer on trombone. The group was perhaps his best, and they achieve a perfect blend of free-flowing improvised lines, while still managing to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann

Surprises
Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint-
A record that's full of many surprises – one of which is the sweet lead vocals of Cissy Houston! Houston works here in a style that merges nicely with the jazzy currents of Herbie Mann – at a level that's different than other soul/fusion sets of the time – like work on CTI or ... Dave Brubeck/Gerry Mulligan/Paul Desmond

We're All Together Again For The First Time
Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint-
Kind of a meeting of two different generations of Dave Brubeck – as the group here features Paul Desmond's alto sax, a key force in Dave's early recordings – and the baritone sax of Gerry Mulligan, a player who'd worked often with Brubeck in the late 60s and early 70s! The blend of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Zawinul

Zawinul
Atlantic, 1971. Very Good+
A beautiful fusion of Joe Zawinul's roots in the groups of Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley – a set with some of the far-reaching jazz ideas of the former, and much of the soulful subtleties of the latter! The album features Joe on electric piano throughout, playing alongside Herbie ... LP, Vinyl record album

Trad jazz from this Dixieland/old Chicago-styled ensemble that featured Vic Dickenson, Billy Butterfield, Bud Freeman, Ralph Sutton, Lou McGarity, and Lawson and Haggart. Atlantic, 1957. Near Mint-
Groundbreaking trio work from the great Jimmy Giuffre – an album that cut loose both the piano and the drums – in a way that took Gerry Mulligan's earlier rhythm-less experiments with jazz, and pushed them one degree further! The group on the session features Giuffre on clarinet, tenor ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Bryant

Alone At Montreux
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+
Solo Ray Bryant – recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1972, and featuring versions of a number of his classics, plus a few other odd numbers. Ray's no stranger to the solo piano format – having first recorded this way in the early 60s – and his work in the style is ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, 1955. Very Good+
One of the best Kenton LPs ever, and one that really shows the band's beautiful blend of avant garde playing with a swinging jazz sensibility. A 12" LP release of two 10" albums – one showcasing the arranging style of Bill Russo, the other of Bill Holman. Both sides are excellent, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones

Gula Matari
A&M, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold
A real step forward for Quincy Jones – a record that really shows the jazzman moving into sophisticated new territory – a sound that's just right for the CTI generation! The album's got a vibe that's a bit similar to Quincy's Walking In Space album, but it's a lot deeper too – ... LP, Vinyl record album
World Pacific, 1966. Near Mint-
The alto of Bud Shank gets some fuller backings from the great Bob Florence – all in a mode that's as groovy as you might expect from the title – and which also features a bit of guest work from Chet Baker as well! The sound's nice and buoyant – swinging, but never too over the ... LP, Vinyl record album
