❔

An excellent little record from Hugh Masekela – cut right during that perfect time when he was mixing soul, funk, and just the right amount of jazz to keep things real! The record features some nice electric piano from Joe Sample, and the best cuts have a choppy funky groove. Some cuts have vocals, but the best moments are instrumental – like the riffs on "Jungle Jim", "Night In Tunisia", and "In The Marketplace". (Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cut corner and a spot of residue on the spine.)  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Trumpet Africaine
Mercury, Early 60s. Very Good+
Early work by Hugh Masekela – recorded way before his big hits of the late 60s! The format is different than those recordings, too – with Hugh soloing on trumpet, over larger arrangements by Hugo Montenegro that have sort of a stock African soundtrack-y quality to them. The jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hugh Masekela's Latest
Uni/Chisa, Late 60s. Very Good
Nice hard funky Afro soul from Hugh – cut during the time when he was really perfecting his sweet little blend of African rhythms and LA soul! The tracks are all short and hard – with funky trumpet in the lead, and some tight hard-grooving rhythms in the back. Most of this stuff feels ... LP, Vinyl record album
24 Karat Hits
Verve, Late 60s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A great little set of Hugh's MGM recordings – and one that features a nice mix of pop instrumental tracks, and others that have a more sophisticated African Soul sound. Included in this bunch are "Bajabula Bonke (Healing Song) parts 1 & 2", "U-Dwi", "Masquenada ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sorrow Tears & Blood
Barclay (France), 1977. Near Mint- (reissue)
An impassioned attack on police and army violence in 70s Nigeria – and easily one of Fela Kuti's best-remembered albums of the time! The lead track – "Sorrow Tears & Blood" – is really tremendous – a wicked groove that begins with a very long electric piano ... LP, Vinyl record album

There may be lots of tambourine at this party, but there's plenty more as well – including some monstrous basslines that instantly make the record a treasure for fans of any funk styles from the 70s! In fact, despite the Nigerian origin of the set, it's probably just as reasonable for you to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy, 1973. Very Good+
One of the hippest albums ever cut by Letta Mbulu – a perfect mix of her Soweto roots and the funky styles of her adopted California home! The album's the only one that Mbulu ever recorded for Fantasy Records – and the style brings together those great sing-song vocal modes perfected ... LP, Vinyl record album
Dance To The Beat Of My Drum
Roulette, 1986. Near Mint-
It's the mid 80s and Mickey Hart's behind the production on this album, so you know it has a slick, glossy touch all over it, with a very "world music" approach. But the beauty of Olatunji's playing and subtle complexity of the rhythms trump the flashy approach. The lineup is huge, with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Magic Of Makeba
RCA, 1966. Very Good
A bit of a mainstream effort from Makeba, perhaps trying to break her in the US market, as this set features more of an emphasis on pop material and standards than on some of her other records. Sid Bass conducted and arranged the orchestral backing on the folk and sixties pop classics, which doesn' ... LP, Vinyl record album

African Songs/Serengeti (UK), Late 70s. Near Mint-
A great Sunny Ade disc licensed from the hard to get African Songs label!
