❔

An excellent little record from Hugh Masekela – cut right during that perfect time when he was mixing soul, funk, and just the right amount of jazz to keep things real! The record features some nice electric piano from Joe Sample, and the best cuts have a choppy funky groove. Some cuts have vocals, but the best moments are instrumental – like the riffs on "Jungle Jim", "Night In Tunisia", and "In The Marketplace". (Cover has a half split top seam and appears to have been signed by the artist.)  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Casablanca, 1976. Very Good+
Hats off to Hugh Masekela – one of the few artists who could record for the Casablanca label and never manage to lose his own sense of sound and spirit! The album's a surprisingly great one, filled with the kinds of subtle touches and earthy soul we've always loved in Hugh's music – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mercury, Early 60s. Very Good+
Early work by Hugh Masekela – recorded way before his big hits of the late 60s! The format is different than those recordings, too – with Hugh soloing on trumpet, over larger arrangements by Hugo Montenegro that have sort of a stock African soundtrack-y quality to them. The title tells it all – as Ravi delivers three long ragas, with backing on tabla and tamboura. A nice one to plug in and drop out to – with the 28 minute-long "Raga Jog", plus "Raga Simhendra Madhyaman" and "Raga Ahir Bhairav". LP, Vinyl record album

Mississippi, 1974. Near Mint- (reissue)
Afro-psychedelia from Chrissy Zebby Tembo – a set recorded in the Zambian scene of the early 70s, and served up in a blend of fuzzy guitar, funky drums, and some really unusual vocals! At times, Chrissy's voice almost sounds like it's being processed – filtered down nicely amidst the ... LP, Vinyl record album
