David Newman — Mr Fathead ... CD 3.99

A pretty sweet set from reedman David Newman – a record that has him working with larger instrumental backdrops, in a mode that's almost like the sound going on with Stanley Turrentine over at CTI! William S. Fischer handled all the arrangements – so although things are tight, there's still a cool creative undercurrent too – way more than just standard orchestrations behind Newman's sweet solo lines on alto, tenor, and soprano sax. A few cuts have backing vocals – used in ways you might hear on a Hank Crawford album – and titles include "Shiki", "Promise Me Your Love", "Ebo Man", "Groovin To The Music", "I Love Music", and "Mashooganah".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Shrinkwrap has a hole at the top. Cover has a cutout notch.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Johnny Keating

This Bird Has Flown
Warner, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
One of our favorite albums ever by Johnny Keating! Long before he discovered the moog for his 70s funk albums, Keating was cranking out some fantastic big band work during the 60s – mixing together odd rhythmic patterns in a way that set his work apart from most other Brit leaders, coming up ... David Sanborn

Sanborn
Warner, 1976. Near Mint-
A damn great early moment from David Sanborn – a record that really shows the reedman at his best – working some tight solos over soulful backings in the same 70s manner as Tom Scott or Wilton Felder! Like both of those players, David's got the chops to step out in front of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Apogee
Warner, 1978. Near Mint-
A brilliant set of post-post-post Konitz jazz – a late 70s Warne Marsh session, produced by Donald Fagan and Walter Becker of Steely Dan! Despite the smooth jazz feeling of Becker & Fagan's own work, the pair are completely respectful to Marsh and his twin-tenor frontman Pete Christlieb ... LP, Vinyl record album

David Sanborn

Promise Me The Moon
Warner, 1977. Near Mint-
Warm mellow soul from David Sanborn – a surprisingly nice early album, recorded without all the schmaltz of his later work! Very tasty funky fusion session, cut by bassist Miroslav Vitous in San Francisco – along with a group that includes Airto, Herbie Hancock, and Jack DeJohnette. Claus Ogerman & Michael Brecker

Cityscape
Warner, 1982. Near Mint-
A great showcase for the talents of a young Michael Brecker – rich orchestrations by Claus Ogerman, topped by Brecker's sharp-edged, and well-stated lines on tenor!
