Pure Smokey

LP (Item 31422) Motown, 1974 — Condition: Sealed

Excellent mid 70s work from Smokey, recorded right before his landmark Quiet Storm album, and in a smooth sophisticated style that showed that he was definitely on the right track after splitting from the Miracles! The sound here is totally great – a new level of sophistication for Robinson, and proof that he was one of the key folks who would take soul music to new levels in the 70s! The record includes the excellent "Virgin Man", a loping midtempo track that's not only a great stepper, but also a famous sample riff. Other tracks include "I Am I Am", "Fulfill Your Need", "Just Passing Through", "The Love Between Me & My Kids", and "It's Her Turn To Live".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Reissue pressing. Cover has a cutout notch.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Smokey Robinson

Yes It's You Lady
Tamla, 1982. Near Mint-
A slightly more-grooving record than some of Smokey's others from the time – done in a style that rolls around in a mostly-midtempo mode. There's almost a gentle 80s groove approach at times, although some of the tunes on the set are definitely in that stone mellow love song style that was ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smokey Robinson

Essar
Tamla, 1984. Very Good+
Smokey's a little bit off course here – heading into a range of mellow pop soul styles that are clearly inspired by artists who were inspired by Smokey's own majestic solo turn in the 70s – but who never manage to match his quality. And since Smokey's taking inspiration from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Return Of The Magnificent Seven
Motown, 1971. Near Mint-
A follow-up to 1970s pairing of The Supremes and The Four Tops – titled The Magnificent Seven (hence the title on this one!) – and done in a very similar mode. Back in the Diana Ross days, the Supremes had paired up with The Temptations on 2 great sets – and now, at a time in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Heavenly heavenly soul from one of the best voices in the Motown stable – the mighty David Ruffin, heard here at the height of his early solo powers! Stevie Wonder

Eivets Rednow – Alfie
Motown, 1968. Near Mint-
A late 60s all-instrumental set from Stevie Wonder – and a record that shows a real change from his style in the earlier part of the decade – a much more mature move forward, and one that hints at the power of his arrangements in the 70s! Motown, 1960s. Very Good+
Given how much you hear this sort of stuff on the radio, you could easily forget that the Four Tops are actually a heck of a great vocal group, with harmonies that blew away many of their contemporaries, and which keep their work shining long past the hits.
