Macanudo

LP (Item 3128) Argo, 1963 — Condition: Near Mint-

One of Ahmad's best albums ever – a Latin-ized set of tracks done with arrangements by Richard Evans, who really knows how to make the set groove! Ahmad's flowing piano lines come into play with lots of tight percussion and big band backing – in a way that never dampens his spirit, and almost seems to open him up with more of an edge than on his trio recordings. The record includes the killer groover "Haitian Marketplace", which jumps and clangs all over the place, and has a hard catchy hook that's unlike any other Ahmad Jamal record – and also features loads of other great originals by Evans, including "Bossa Nova Do Marilla", "Belo Horizonte", "Montevideo", and "Bogota".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Grey label Argo pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ahmad Jamal

Rossiter Road
Atlantic, 1986. Very Good+
One of Ahmad Jamal's great mid 80s sets for Atlantic Records – recorded in a spacious acoustic mode that has Jamal crafting beautiful tones on the Steinway, yet never falling into overindulgence! The record's got a surprisingly rhythmic quality – as the drums of Herlin Riley and bass ... LP, Vinyl record album

Inspiration
Cadet, Late 50s/1960s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A 2LP set that collects some of Ahmad Jamal's best work for Argo and Chess – put together with a really wonderful selection of tunes! Outertimeinnerspace
Impulse, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold

Ahmad Jamal

Cry Young
Cadet, 1967. Near Mint-
A sweet swinger from Ahmad – a record that has his usual trio (Jamil Nasser bass, Frank Gant drums) augmented by the super-hip Howard Roberts Chorale on a number of tracks. Roberts' "jazz with voices" style isn't as out there as some of the work of Coleridge Perkinson, but he does ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ahmad Jamal

Heat Wave
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+
This mid 60s set for Cadet finds Jamal and his trio, featuring Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums playing it cool despite the title – which is actually the Irving Berlin penned lead track. Other tracks include a rendition of Sonny Rollins' "St. Thomas", the latin-tinged ... LP, Vinyl record album
20th Century, 1976. Very Good+
Unlike Ahmad's other LPs for 20th Century, this one's a fairly straight set of tracks, with (mostly) acoustic piano (although he does play Fender Rhodes on one track). Ahmad Jamal

One
20th Century, 1978. Near Mint-
A great little set from Ahmad – laidback, mellow, with a slowly spiralling groove that's slyly funky at times. Ahmad's playing acoustic piano and clavinet on the record – and arrangements are by Bones Howe, Richard Evans, Ahmad, and Mike Melvoin. A few tracks feature a larger group ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1961. Very Good+
Not just a wonderful record for the music, but also for the classic cover image too – a photo of Ahmad Jamal's righteous night club The Alhambra – an Eastern-themed spot on Chicago's Michigan Ave, where Jamal made some incredible music for a few short years! Jamal was one of the few ... LP, Vinyl record album

Perception
Argo, 1961. Near Mint-

Argo, 1962. Very Good+
No blues, and only a little bit of country – mostly in the song choice for the set, and in the way the whole thing is put together! The core stylings here are still the Ramsey Lewis Trio at their early 60s best – but the record does feature a slight country-meets-soul sort of style in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Baby Face Willette

Behind The 8 Ball
Argo, 1964. Good+
Classic hard-hitting organ jazz session by this great Chicago keyboard player, better known to the world for his two Blue Note LPs, but playing here in a style that's much more creative, and much more open-ended than on those LPs. He's got a tight trio here, with Ben White on guitar and Jerry ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Moody

James Moody (1959)
Argo, 1959. Very Good
Great work from Moody's "second phase" – the post-Overbrook time in which he picks up the flute, drops a bit of the bop style, and starts working in a much more complicated style that showed that he had a hell of a lot of room to grow as an artist! This album's Moody's second for ... LP, Vinyl record album
