❔

One of the greatest moments ever from bassist Miroslav Vitous – a very cool album recorded for the trippy Vortex label! The lineup here has Miroslav working with key help from the American underground – piano from Herbie Hancock, tenor from Joe Henderson, and drums from Jack DeJohnette – plus added guitar from John McLaughlin, who seems to have the same spacey sensibilities as Vitous! Henderson really opens up too – in that fluid style of his post-Blue Note work on Milestone – and obviously Herbie's a great one for a set like this too – hitting some of the spiritual modes of his Warner work. Some tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Freedom Jazz Dance", "Infinite Search", "I Will Tell Him On You", "Mountain In the Cloudes", and "Epilogue".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Vortex, 1970. Near Mint-
Groovily tripped-out work from vibist Dave Pike – and one of the few American albums that matches the experimental sound of his work for MPS! The session's often quite free and open – in a way that not only uses odd instrumental combinations and arrangements, but which also features ... LP, Vinyl record album

Robin Kenyatta

Until
Vortex, 1968. Near Mint-
One of the earliest albums as a leader from reedman Robin Kenyatta – and a set that's also one of his most compelling too! There's a definitely freer sound here than on some of Robin's smoother sets from the 70s – a vibe that's somewhere near the space of Impulse Records in the post-Col ... LP, Vinyl record album

Keith Jarrett

Somewhere Before
Vortex, 1968. Near Mint-
A wonderful illustration of the inherent sense of beauty in Keith Jarrett's early work – an approach to piano that was simple, straightforward, and marked by a ringing sense of tone that's evident in the very first note of the set! Jarrett here isn't trying to break any rules in jazz piano, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Steve Marcus

Lord's Prayer
Vortex, 1969. Near Mint-
A wonderfully mixed-up, messed-up batch of jazzy tracks from the great Steve Marcus – working here at the height of his late 60s powers on Atlantic's ultra-cool Vortex label! As with other Marcus albums of the time, there's kind of a long haired, freewheeling energy to the set – jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Gault

When Destiny Calls
Steeplechase/Inner City, 1976. Near Mint-
Great stuff – and a beautiful album of spiritual jazz recorded by this obscure piano player who worked briefly with Jackie McLean in the seventies. Billy Gault had an amazingly soulful way of putting together his work, but never got bogged down in too much sentiment. There's some beautiful ... LP, Vinyl record album

King Fleming Trio

Stand By
Argo, 1962. Very Good+
Incredible work from Chicago pianist King Fleming – a lost talent that had a key influence on more famous players in the scene, but who rarely got his due because he hardly left the Windy City! The set's got a really incredible feel – partly in the gentle groove of Ahmad Jamal, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Thumb, Early 70s. Very Good+ Gatefold
A brilliant record by Sun Ra & The Arkestra – and an album that forever gave them a slogan to live by! The record's different than some of the other Arkestra work from the time – in that it's a bit tighter and more spiritual, more in keeping with the style of the Blue Thumb label, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Larkin & The Delegates

Pigmy
Aura, Early 60s. Very Good+
Killer stuff! This is one of Billy's earliest albums, and it's a monster batch of funky organ tunes with a much harder groove than on later works! The group is Billy's early Delegates trio – with Hank Swarn on guitar and Mel Brown on drums – and bad, bad grooves abound: including the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley

Nippon Soul
Riverside, 1963. Very Good+
A swingin' Japanese concert by one of Cannonball's best groups from the 60's. Joe Zawinul's on piano, brother Nat's on cornet, Sam Jones is on bass, and Louis Hayes is on drums. But the real treat here is Yusef Lateef, who does some excellent reed work on tenor, flute, and oboe – and who's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Rounder, 1980. Near Mint-
A very nice session that actually has a bit of a soul jazz touch – with elements that are similar to Ra's Lanquidity set, a much sought-after spacey fusion classic! The band still plays fairly out, but the singing's a bit more soulful than usual, and the music has some funky vibes, guitar, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lennie Tristano

Lennie Tristano
Atlantic, 1955. Very Good-
Darkly imaginative work from the great Lennie Tristano – and one of the few full albums he ever cut as a leader! The record features the incredible track "Turkish Mambo" – which has Tristano overdubbed 3 times in this dark modal way that's totally amazing, and which will hook ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ohio Players

Greatest Hits
Westbound, 1975. Very Good Gatefold
Great gatefold compilation of their funky Westbound tracks, with such faves as "Pain", "Walt's First Trip", "Funky Worm", "Varee is Love", "Climax", and more. Slightly different track listing than the "Best of the Early Years" comp, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
