❔
A monster – and quite possibly one of the greatest Fender Rhodes albums of all time! Bob James is really at the height of his powers here – stepping out with a sound that's a lot smoother than some of his earlier work, yet in a groove that's never too slick or too overproduced – as happened with some of his later records on the Tappan Zee imprint. Here, James is still a master of space and sound – using the Fender Rhodes with bell-like tones to craft some key grooves that are still having an amazing impact today, more than 40 years after the album was initially recorded! There's a darkness here that we totally love – and tracks include the legendary "Take Me To The Mardi Gras", which has been sampled by Run DMC and loads of others – plus"The Golden Apple", "I Feel A Song", "You're As Right As Rain", "Farandole", and "Dream Journey".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Yellow label stereo pressing with Van Gelder stamp in the red title cover. Includes the CTI inner sleeve. Cover has some surface and edge wear, fading at the spine, and small stickers at the bottom seam.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bob James

Lucky Seven
Tappan Zee, 1979. Near Mint- Gatefold
Bob James is picking up some extra keyboards here – mixing his usual Fender Rhodes with a bit of Oberheim Polyphonic – but the overall sound of the record is still pretty great, and filled with those warm, spacious tones that make Bob's albums so great! Things are slightly smooth, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bob James

Bold Conceptions
Mercury, 1962. Very Good+
Early early work by Bob James – recorded years before his classic 70s sides on electric piano, and in a brightly modern mode that recalls the spirit of Steve Kuhn and Paul Bley at the time! Kenny Burrell

God Bless The Child
CTI, 1971. Very Good
A stone classic from Kenny Burrell – a record that brought the guitarist to a whole new audience, with a wonderful sound that's a perfect summation of CTI at its best! George Benson

White Rabbit
CTI, 1971. Sealed Gatefold
One of the moodiest sessions on CTI from the early days – and a landmark album that took George Benson from the funky jazz scene into the upper reaches of 70s jazz. The record was put together by Don Sebesky, and it's a lot more high concept than some of George's earlier work – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Jackson

Goodbye
CTI, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold

Sky Dive
CTI, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
A killer set from Freddie Hubbard's legendary years on CTI! Ron ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley Turrentine

Sugar
CTI, 1970. Sealed Gatefold
A big hit for Stanley Turrentine – and a pretty darn nice record of extended groovers, with a harder sound than you might expect from the tongue-licking cover, and a title of Sugar! The record's only got three cuts – one of them Stanley's famous version of "Sugar", the other ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hubert Laws

San Francisco Concert
CTI, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
Really wonderful work from Hubert Laws – maybe one of his greatest albums for CTI!
