Cool & Crazy (10 inch LP)

LP (Item 3034) RCA, Early 50s — Condition: Very Good

Classic West Coast session, long hailed by critics as one of the best to come out of the LA scene. Shorty Rogers leads a crack group of players (Art Pepper, Jimmy Giuffre, Bob Cooper) through a bunch of short swinging tracks that really have an edge to them. One of the best things Rogers ever did, released here on the original RCA 10" LP, in beautiful shape!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has split seams and light surface wear.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

RCA, Early 50s. Very Good
Excellent early west coast material – and some of the greatest work that Shorty Rogers ever put on record! Unlike some of Rogers' other sides for RCA, which were often a bit gimmicky or strangely-themed, this one's a straight grooving session of west coast jazz, played by some of the finest ... MGM, Late 50s. Very Good+
Quite possibly our favorite Shorty Rogers album ever – an incredible soundtrack that's unlike most of his other work of the time! The record features Shorty's score for the film Tarzan The Ape Man (and a cover that has Shorty being carried in the arms of same!) – and as you might guess ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington

Far East Suite
RCA, 1967. Near Mint-
One of Ellington's greatest albums of the 60s – and a record tinged with Eastern themes and darkly angular modern arrangements. The group here features Ellington stalwarts Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, Harry Carney, Cootie Williams, Mercer Ellington, and Rufus Jones – and the players ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Desmond

Glad To Be Unhappy
RCA, 1965. Near Mint-
Hard to be unhappy in a setting like this – a classic RCA session from the 60s, and one that matches the sublime icy alto sax of Paul Desmond with the perfectly airy guitar of the great Jim Hall! The pair work simple wonders with familiar tunes on the set – bringing together a love of ... LP, Vinyl record album

A lively band of young British players, packed into a large group with a tight swinging sound that evokes some of the better continental bands of the sort at the time – like the Clarke-Boland Ensemble, the Johnny Dankworth group, and even bits of Mike Westbrook's early work. Chucho Zarzosa Y Su Conjunto

Concierto En Jazz
RCA, 1962. Very Good
A live set from this obscure Mexican jazz combo – recorded in the early 60s, in a mode that's kind of a small combo take on an Ellington sound, but with some freer twists too! The approach is nicely offbeat – starting out familiar at first, but then opening up with some offbeat ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Desmond

Samba De Orfeu
RCA, 1960s. Very Good+
A nice little reissue of some of Paul Desmond's great RCA sides. Put together in the mid 70s, but collecting recordings from a decade earlier, this nice little LP includes many of the nice numbers Desmond recorded in his cool quartet with Jim Hall, plus a few of the nice string laden numbers from ...
