Best Of Billy Larkin & The Delegates

LP (Item 30302) World Pacific, Mid 60s — Condition: Very Good+

Monster groovers! This late 60s compilation brings together some of the best early work by organist Billy Larkin, and his amazing Delegates trio! Plus, some of the tracks feature some excellent sax work by the legendary Clifford Scott – best known to the world for his 50s work with Bill Doggett, but sounding even better here, with a nice clean round sound. The set includes the always-favorite groover "Pygmy", plus the tracks "Sticky Wicket", "Ice Water", "Hainty", "The Peeper", "Killer Joe", and "Blue Lights".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some minor stains and small seam splits.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bud Shank

Folk N Flute
World Pacific, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A really cool concept for a record from Bud Shank – one that has the reedman on some nicely moody flute, with backing from a group that features Joe Pass on guitar! The record's a key entry in that short 60s genre of folk-meets-jazz – and Shank brings some great tones to bear on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

A masterpiece through and through from arranger Gil Evans – a record of swinging modern backdrops, used to showcase both the solo talents of a young Cannonball Adderley, and the dynamic energy of Evans himself! Cannon's sharp-edged early tone is a really great sound for the record – ... LP, Vinyl record album

This album's got a very telling title – as Joe's guitar is working here with bigger arrangements by Bob Florence, backings that go for a mod 60s sound! Florence uses a range of instrumentation on the set, plus some occasional vocal choruses, all in a mode that's got some very nice mid 60s LA ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wilbert Longmire

Revolution
World Pacific, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
An excellent album from funky guitarist Wilbert Longmire – probably his best, in our opinion! The album was recorded in LA with some very hip arrangements from Joe Sample – at the head of a largeish soul jazz group that includes usual suspects from the LA scene, like Paul Humphrey, ... Gerry Mulligan

Paris Concert
World Pacific, 1954. Very Good Gatefold
US issue of some of Gerry's classic Vogue recordings, done in Paris in 1954 with a quartet that featured Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Red Mitchell on bass, and Frank Isola on drums. This is Gerry at the height of his powers, and playing classic piano-less material with supberb accompaniment ... LP, Vinyl record album

The title's no lie, because the Jazz Crusaders are certainly a powerhouse here – blowing with a tightness and soulful swing that few other groups could hope to match! Easily the trippiest of Paul Horn's 60s experiments – and even more far-reaching than his Paul Horn In India set! Les McCann

Hustle To Survive
Atlantic, 1975. Sealed
Sweet funky soul from Les McCann – one of the best of his 70s albums that bring in a lot of vocals with the keyboards – and served up in some tight tunes that really pack a nice sort of punch! The album doesn't have the long jammers of some of McCann's other records from the time ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley

Lovers
Fantasy, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
Late stuff by Cannonball, with a dope spacey electric sound, no doubt due to some very nice keyboards on the session by George Duke. The album's a bit mellower than some of the others on Fantasy, but it makes up for that with a warm snaking mellow funk groove. Brother Nat gives a helping hand on ... LP, Vinyl record album
