Free Your Mind . . . And Your Ass Will Follow

LP (Item 3028) Westbound, 1970 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
An insane classic from one of the wildest funk bands ever! According to reports, George Clinton and the band cut this set in a marathon 48-hour stretch in the studio – working like mad all night and day long, after dropping a motherlode of some mighty fine acid! We don't know if that story's entirely true, but the music on the album certainly backs it up – as it's some of the band's freest, most open-ended, most heavy-jamming work ever recorded! Guitars dominate over funky bass and drums – and the whole thing's an amazing blend of music, swirled together into a non-stop psychedelic party that includes P-Funk gems like "Funky Dollar Bill", "Free Your Mind", "Eulogy and Light", and "I Wanna Know If It's Good To You".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(180 gram 4 Men With Beards reissue.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Westbound, 1975. Near Mint-
A killer compilation – one that's every bit as wild and wooly as the famous image on the cover! The set came out in the mid 70s, and it's a perfect summation of all the greatness that Funkadelic had given the group in just a few short years – their brilliant way of blending together ... Westbound, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold
An oft-overlooked gem by Funkadelic – the group's last album for Westbound, and a record that really has them growing into a great new groove! Bootsy and Eddie Hazel have stepped aside for the set, but that gives Bernie Worrell plenty of room to work his magic on keyboards – in a way ... LP, Vinyl record album
Warner, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the crowning moments of genius from the great George Clinton – a record that has Funkadelic really finding their groove, in the same way that Parliament were helping push underground funk into both the clubs and the mainstream – while also showing that the P-Funk empire can jam ... Ohio Players

Rattlesnake
Westbound, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold
A collection of funky tracks recorded by The Players when the were with Westbound, but released later, when they hit Mercury. Sort of a "cleaning house" effort, and not really a unified album, but that doesn't stop it from having some nice moments. Titles include "Introducing the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Average White Band

Person To Person
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Their classic double live set from the mid 70s, and as tight a batch of grooves as you'll find on their studio albums! In fact, this one might even be tighter, as it's got a good set of classic tracks performed live, with a sound that's a little bit more uptight and open than the studio ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, 1976. Very Good+
The title track to this one – "Right Back Where We Started From – was a real 70s monster, hitting big on AM radio and the dancefloors, and still kind of a guilty pleasure for us these days. The rest of the record's a bit spotty – but there's a few nice moments, like Maxine's ... LP, Vinyl record album

War

Outlaw
RCA, 1982. Very Good+
A sweet snapping groove from War – a set that has the group picking up a bit more boogie in their bounce than before, but at a level that helps keep their funk fresh for a whole new generation! The album's a heck of a lot warmer and more live than most of their contemporaries – and ... LP, Vinyl record album
CTI, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great little album of jazzy soul – the second that Seawind cut for CTI, and very much an extension of the first! The album's got a breezy west coast fusion sound – kind of like work that was coming out of Fantasy Records, or some of the more obscure independent fusion albums at the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Another nice one from Sade – perhaps not as edgey as some of her earlier work, recorded in a slightly smoother style, but still quite nice to our ears – as Sade's always been a pleasure, no matter what the setting! A great album – even if Miriam's not in as many voices as promised by the title! (Who do they think she is – Rich Little?) The recording quality appears to be live – as the tracks have an open jamming style, with Miriam singing in that rich, folksy style of her early years, ... LP, Vinyl record album
