Everybody's Talkin'

LP (Item 30089) Atco, 1972 — Condition: Very Good+
King Curtis' last album of studio work for Atlantic – pulled from a number of sessions recorded in the year before his untimely early death! The sound here is tightened up a bit from King's grooves of the 60s – done with a style that still draws on the Atlantic soul sound that Curtis helped forge in earlier years, yet which also has a good deal of 70s electric funk touches creeping into the mix – a style that we would have loved to hear more of, had King stayed on this planet long enough. Players include Richard Tee, Paul Griffin, Cornell Dupree, Bernard Purdie, and The Memphis Horns – and the titles include the usual Curtis-styled take on pop and soul tunes of the time, plus a few originals for the set. Includes a funky version of King Floyd's "Groove Me", plus the cuts "Ridin' Thumb", "Central Park", "Wet Funk", "Ridin' Thumb Jam", and "You're The One".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sublime uptown soul from the great Ben E King – and session that has him paired with a young Claus Ogermann on arrangements! Otis Redding

Tell The Truth
Atco, 1970. Very Good+
In the years after his death, when Otis Redding had approached near-deity status, Atlantic was digging through their vaults (recently swiped from Stax!) to find whatever they could to put together a record. Although they were a UK soul act, Jimmy James and The Vagabonds were a perfect match for the Atlantic soul stable of the 60s. Sly's still doing pretty nice for himself in 1974 – with a sound that's perhaps a bit warmer than on the early records, but still nice and soulful – and peppered with a good dose of funk!
