Healing Force

LP (Item 30050) Black Saint (Italy), 1976 — Condition: Near Mint-

Free-flowing piano magic from Don Pullen – a seminal solo session, and a great illustration of Pullen's powers on his own! Don's got a wonderfully sensitive approach here – a style that's dripping with soul, and which moves past simple jazz solo modes into a world of sounds and shapes that are really beautiful – rich tones that echo out brilliantly in a deeply personal tapestry of sound. There's almost a mellow Strata East feel to the record at points – and titles include "Pain Inside", "Healing Force", "Tracey's Blues", and "Keep On Steppin".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A groundbreaking ensemble – akin to the World Saxophone Quartet, and no doubt inspired by their experiments at the same time. One of the best-remembered Anthony Braxton albums from the 80s – and for good reason too, as there's a strength to the record that's evident from the very first note! Blues Shout
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good+
A beautiful record, and one of the few albums ever cut as a leader by alto player Leo Wright! At the time of the set, Wright was really making some excellent records with Lalo Schifrin and in Dizzy Gillespie's group (where they both were working at the time) – and this set is a perfect ... It's Uptown
Columbia, 1967. Very Good+
George Benson's first LP for Columbia – a hard, heavy, soul jazz slammer that bears no resemblance to his overproduced work of the 70s! Milt Jackson joins the Monty Alexander Trio – bringing a new level of sound to the group that had already been winning our hearts with their 70s work on MPS! The Marquis De Sade never sounded so sweet! For some strange reason, Schifrin decided to pay a musical hommage to De Sade with this one – but fortunately, he's not punishing himself with the subject matter at all, and is sticking to his jazzy bossa guns. Warne Out
Interplay, 1977. Near Mint-
Wonderful work from tenorist Warne Marsh – a player we almost like more in these later years than we do during the famous 50s recordings that brought him to everyone's attention!
