Let Your Mind Be Free

LP (Item 2984) Turbo, 1976 — Condition: Very Good+

The second album by this lost East Coast funk act – and although not as totally excellent as their first, still a very nice record that's filled with choppy up-tempo grooves, and some nice dancefloor soul. There's plenty of funky keyboards in the mix – moog, clavinet, and Arp – and the ablum's got a few nice funky moments – like the cuts "Phattenin'" and the classic groover "Chance with You". Also includes the cuts "Joni", "Groovy Day", and "Visions".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Invictus, 1973. Near Mint-
A bit confused at points, but one of the funkiest albums on Invictus! The 8th Day group was a loosely conceived batch of Detroit soul talents designed to cash in on a concept of the Holland-Dozier-Holland team – but fortunately, they also included some wonderful talents that could make some ... Gladys Knight & The Pips

Claudine – Original Soundtrack
Buddah, 1974. Very Good+
A wonderful mid 70s set from Gladys Knight & The Pips – a soundtrack date written and produced by Curtis Mayfield, who really helps bring a lot of depth to their music! Curtis really helps Knight and the group get out of some of their hit cliches of the 70s, and find some hipper space ... LP, Vinyl record album
SOUL, 1966. Very Good+
A great full length album from Motown's mighty Jimmy Ruffin – and a set with a lot deeper soul sound than you'd guess from the "top ten" in the title! The music's not commercial, but some of the sharpest Motown soul of the time – the kind of work that made the young Jimmy as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shirelles

Hear & Now
Pricewise/Scepter, 1964. Very Good+
A set that was issued by the Pricewise budget subsidiary of Scepter Records – but one that also features some great lesser-known work by The Shirelles – material that was still unreleased at the time of this LP, mixed here with some bigger hits to round things out nicely! The groove is ... LP, Vinyl record album
AVI, 1978. Very Good+
Although Captain Sky was pretty much just a proto-P-Funk wannabe on most of his records, this one's actually a pretty decent batch of grooves – and it includes the excellent "Super Sporm", a killer extended track with a great conga break, and a tight old school sample sound! Also ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fingers Inc

Another Side
Jack Trax (UK), 1988. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold
A beautiful full length set from Fingers Inc – one of the more important groups on the Chicago house underground of the 80s – and maybe one of the most fully developed, too! The set shows that keyboardist Larry Heard and crew really had a lot more to offer than just standard house ... LP, Vinyl record album

DJ Rogers

DJ Rogers
Shelter, 1973. Very Good+
Mindblowing music from the great DJ Rogers – his first record, and a rootsy album of spiritual soul, right up there with the best 70s work by artists like Donny Hathaway, Rance Allen, or Stevie Wonder! Like all of those giants, DJ's got a deeply soulful vocal style that's more than ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aaron Neville

Tell It Like It Is
Par Lo, 1965. Very Good+
Fantastic stuff – a landmark in New Orleans soul, and a rare turning point for singer Aaron Neville – an essential full length set that really presented all the changes that had taken place in New Orleans soul during the 60s! The album was issued before the bigger west coast albums ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cheryl Lynn

Instant Love
Columbia, 1982. Very Good+
Cheryl Lynn and Luther Vandross – a tremendous combination that makes for one heck of a great record! Luther arranged and produced the entire set – and he does a great job here of pushing Cheryl Lynn into more upbeat territory without getting too poppy or schmaltzy! In a way, the ... Pharoah Sanders

Live At The East
Impulse, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the most spiritual albums recorded by Pharoah Sanders for Impulse – an open-ended and free-thinking exploration of ideas, all very much in the late John Coltrane mode! The group's a largeish one – filled with spiritual soul jazz luminaries who include Hannibal Marvin Peterson on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Body Meta
Artists House, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold
Heavy duty stuff, and one of Ornette's best LPs from the 70's. Recorded in 1976, this is a perfect demonstration of the harmelodic style, with the whole group jaunting along in tight choppy bits. James Blood Ulmer's on guitar, and the sound is very dark and deep. Tracks include "Voice ... LP, Vinyl record album
