Que Viva La Musica

LP (Item 29793) Fania, 1972 — Condition: Near Mint-
Also available
Ray Barretto — Que Viva La Musica (180 gram pressing) ... LP 26.99
A fantastic classic from Latin percussion legend Ray Barretto – one of his most sophisticated albums of the 70s, and a set that's different than some of his later salsa hits! The album mixes together rootsy percussion and smoother jazzy arrangements – in a manner that keeps things fresh at all points, and which shifts the focus nicely from track to track – creating a really rich sound that's almost unlike anything else he ever recorded! Luiz Cruz plays excellent electric piano, and Adalberto Santiago is on lead vocals on a few tracks – and titles include the extended version of "Cocinando", used as the theme in Our Latin Thing – plus the cuts "Que Viva La Musica", "El Tiempo Lo Dira", "Bruca Manigua", and "Alafia Cumaye".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(50th Anniversary 180 gram Craft pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good
Killer Latin soul from one of the all-time greats – a collection of greatest hits from Mongo Santamaria, but a set that's every bit as essential as his full length albums for Columbia! Most of the cuts on the album were arranged by Mongo's key right-hand man – the great Marty Sheller, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cotique, 1968. Very Good+
Ahhhhh . . . The wonderful sounds of Joey Pastrana – the hip Latin Soul bandleader who was known to the kids as "Hot" Pastrana! An amazingly smoking set from trumpeter Arturo Sandoval – issued on a tiny label from Chicago, but easily one of his best records ever! El Gran Combo

Latin Power
Gema, 1968. Good
Latin Power is Latin Soul – and the album is one of El Gran Combo's best from the boogaloo era! The tunes are heavy on English language lyrics, and include a few great remakes of Anglo pop and soul tunes – all given a Latin Soul spin with plenty of heavy rhythms on the bottom, fierce ... Manzanita Y Su Conjunto

Trujilo, Peru – 1971 to 1974
Analog Africa (Germany), Early 1970s. Sealed Gatefold
Stunning sounds from the early 70s Peruvian scene – a really unique take on the cumbia mode of the time, and one that's topped with plenty of psychedelic touches as well! Herbie Hancock

Fat Albert Rotunda
Warner, 1969. Sealed
A crucial record in the career of keyboard legend Herbie Hancock – the first session in which he really gets all-out funky, but in a way that's different than his spacier jams to come in the 70s! At some level, the album links the early soul jazz modes of Herbie's first few Blue Note ... LP, Vinyl record album

Trumpeter Louis Smith made only two records for Blue Note, but both of them are great! This set's arguably his most famous – because of a rare uncredited appearance by Cannonball Adderley, working here under the "nom de date" of "Buckshot La Funke" – and blowing ... LP, Vinyl record album
