Gene Ammons has some pretty hip friends here – a roster of talent that includes guest appearances by hornmen Cannonball Adderley, Dexter Gordon, and Nat Adderley on one long jam number – plus Hampton Hawes on electric piano on the entire set! The work's done in a laidback, long-blowing ... LP, Vinyl record album
A great little record – one of Houston's most successful for Prestige! The album follows strongly in that late 60s pre-funk mode that Prestige was cooking up – tight and groovy, with electric bass dropped into the mix, electrifying things a bit, but still really just grooving in a ... Lockjaw and Griff were a mighty team together – and their records from the 60s cook with incredible intensity. This classic album, part of a few that Prestige recorded live at Minton's in Harlem, is a very tasty session of jamming – featuring 4 long tracks, all with incredible two-tenor ... Classic early John Coltrane for Prestige – less a bold statement as a leader than a strong batch of blowing session-styled tracks that show how well Coltrane could hold his own with more established players! The groups on the set vary from track to track – and feature players that ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of Sonny Phillips' hardest hitting albums ever – an all-Hammond set that really cooks hard from start to finish! Sonny's working here in a lean, mean combo with plenty of Prestige jazz funk touches – heavy drums from Bernard Purdie, hard tenor solos from Rusty Bryant, rumbling ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of the few Cobb sides for Prestige to feature an organist, in this case the obscure player Austin Mitchell. The record's got a pretty deep gutbuckety groove, thanks to trombonist Buster Cooper, the other main soloist on the album. Cobb's rich Texas tenor is firmly in place – and titles ... A mellow burner – and a real classic from the early 60s soul jazz years of Prestige Records! The album brings together the saxes of Sonny Stitt (both alto and tenor) and the Hammond of Jack McDuff – who's really coming into his own at this point, and has a lean, mean tone that's a ... Perhaps THE greatest Quincy Jones album of the 60s – a hard-swinging batch of big band bossa tunes – and one of the greatest American takes on the bossa sound ever! Quincy really brings a lot of soul to the set – syncopating the bottom end of the tunes to really bring out the ... LP, Vinyl record album
