❔

One of the best instrumental records to come out of Memphis, and a real kicker by the funky band that went down with Otis Redding in the tragic plane crash in 1968. The leadoff track is the group's amazing hit "Soul Finger", a stormin' instrumental with a wailing brassy sound that influenced a generation with its "charge" kind of groove. Lots of other nice ones, too – like "Bar-Kays Boogaloo", "Knucklehead", "Theme From Hell's Angels", and "Pearl High". The best of the best of Stax helped out, too!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Recent reissue.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bar-Kays

Injoy
Mercury, 1979. Very Good
Later Bar-Kays at their best – still plenty funky, but also working in a smoothly soulful style that became the group's trademark sound at Mercury! The album's got a real bass-heavy appeal from the start – working in a mode that shares a lot with Cameo, The Gap Band, and some of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dramatics

Dramatically Yours
Volt, 1974. Sealed
A great third album from The Dramatics – a really strong effort that retains many of the best elements of the earlier records, particularly the mellow soul side of the group! Otis Redding

Dock Of The Bay
Volt, 1968. Very Good
A very important crossover soul album – a huge hit for Otis Redding that was released after his tragic death in December 1967 – but it's also hard to say if it would have had the impact it did had Redding not passed while the LP was still in production. In a way, the record sort of set ... LP, Vinyl record album

Swordsmen

Swordsmen
RCA, 1969. Sealed
A fantastic album of obscure soul! The group features the duo of Eddie Anderson and Ray Thompson – trading vocal duets in a pointed, fragile, southern-sounding style. Epic, 1974. Very Good-
An insanely wonderful album! Shuggie Otis is the son of Johnny Otis – the LA R&B maestro who was moving heavily into funk at the end of the 60s – and he has this tripped out, super-dope guitar style that he played to strong effect on Johnny's albums of the late 60s and early 70s, ... Sylvers

Sylvers
Pride, 1972. Very Good
The first album by The Sylvers – a soulful band made up of youngsters from the Los Angeles scene, but who had a lot more going on than some of the other kiddie-soul bands of the early 70s! The group's a sextet at this point, with four male voices and two female ones – coming across as ... LP, Vinyl record album
Stax, Early 70s. Very Good
A killer live set by Rufus Thomas – recorded right at the height of his funky comeback, before a very right-on crowd at PJ's Nightclub in LA! Valerie Simpson

Exposed
Tamla, 1971. Sealed
A classic early bit of soul from the Ashford & Simpson team – even though the record is billed under the name of Valerie Simpson as a solo act! Kool & The Gang

Best Of Kool & The Gang
De-Lite, Early 70s. Very Good
This one's called a "best of", but it's really one of the group's first albums, and it pulls together a host of great early tracks, some of which were only ever on singles! The record's got a shiny gold cover, and it's rare as hen's teeth! Titles include "The Penguin", "Le ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tomorrow Is the Question!
Contemporary, 1959. Sealed
