A fantastic album by Paul Bley, and very different than anything else he ever did! The sound is cool and modal, not sharp and angular – a groove that's a wonderful blend of Bley's young modernism with the west coast scene in which the album was recorded – but all with a vibe that's a bit different than most of what was coming out of LA during the 50s! In addition to Bley's piano, the group's got an amazing asset in the vibes of Dave Pike – working here with a lean early sound that's a great match for Paul's sounds on the keys. The rest of the group is great too – with Charlie Haden on bass and Lennie McBrowne on drums – both players with a strong sense of rhythm that really helps flavor the record. Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.
The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:
If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.
