Emitt Rhodes

LP (Item 29388) Dunhill, 1970 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
A really great self-titled set from Emitt Rhodes – a compelling California singer who hardly ever gets his due! The music's a wonderful mix of California late 60s singer/songwriter modes and bits of Beatles-esque production – a blend that makes for a fuller feel than usual for a record like this – a bit more confidence, and some really great punch in the overall sound, but never in a way that's slick or commercial. Emitt handled all instruments and arrangements himself – and Curt Boettcher helped a bit on the mix down, so we're happy to credit him for part of the "punch". Titles include "With My Face On The Floor", "She's Such A Beauty", "Promises I've Made", "Long Time No See", and "You Take The Dark Out Of The Night".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Grass Roots

Alotta Mileage
Dunhill, 1973. Near Mint-
Back in the 60s, the Grass Roots already had this tight, compressed energy that was totally great – a quality that also makes their 70s work like this so wonderful too! There's a focus here that's totally great – horns informed by earlier soul music styles, and vocals that borrow a bit ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mamas & Papas

Papas & Mamas
Dunhill, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
Beautiful harmonies from this legendary group – set to some great backings that include Hal Blaine on drums and Larry Knechtel on keyboards! There's a lot of nice non-hit material – titles that include "Ivy", "Mansions", "The Right Somebody To Love", " ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mamas & Papas

Deliver
Dunhill, 1967. Near Mint-
Wonderfully dark harmonies from The Mamas & The Papas – one of those amazing late 60s albums from the group that was pop on the outside, but something very else underneath – a wonderful blend of modes that was hardly duplicated this well again! There's a slightly spooky feel to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dunhill, 1966. Very Good+
A seminal set from the Sunset Strip scene of the 60s – and just the kind of record that shows why the changes taking place in Cali were so important to the growth of so much other music at the time! Colosseum

Grass Is Greener
ABC/Dunhill, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
Killer work from this jazzy UK combo! Although Colosseum are probably best known as a hard rocking progressive band, they certainly had plenty of jazz touches – and this album spawned the great groover "Elegy", which has become something of a jazzy dancefloor classic over the years! ... People Like Us
Dunhill, 1971. Near Mint-
The final album from The Mamas & The Papas – and a set that really makes us wonder how great they would have sounded had they kept on recording into the 70s! There's definitely a shift here from the earlier work – vocals that still have that incredible way of coming together, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Weasels Ripped My Flesh

A silly cover and title, but one of the most powerful records so far from Frank Zappa – a set that focuses the mad energy of The Mothers into a groove that really packs a lot of punch!
