❔
One of Lonnie Liston Smith's most spiritual sessions, and the record that most clearly shows his roots with Pharoah Sanders! The vibe here is much more jazz-based than on some of Lonnie's other records for Flying Dutchman – with Smith playing as much acoustic piano as he does electric, using the former in long-spiralling lines that have a beautifully meditative quality, and which give the album a real Strata East-like sound. Mtume and Sonny Morgan play percussion, Cecil McBee plays bass, and the real star of the album may well be George Barron – who turns in some beautiful Sonny Fortune-like work on tenor and soprano sax! Titles include "Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord", "Rejuvenation", "Astral Traveling", "I Mani", "Aspirations", and "In Search Of Truth".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Recent UK BGP reissue.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Flying Dutchman, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the more modernist efforts by Oliver Nelson, and proof that he could write and play with a shockingly sharp edge, despite all of the mainstream arrangements he was doing at the time. He leads the "Berlin Dreamband", which is made up of European players, and some of the best ... LP, Vinyl record album

Oh! Calcutta
Flying Dutchman, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
A sweet mix of jazz, funk, and some tighter instrumental modes – a set that takes all the best energy of the Flying Dutchman label, and packs it into shorter tracks that have a very groovy feel! At some level, the album's a bit like the work that Tom Scott was doing for the label at the time ... LP, Vinyl record album

LP...$9.99 11.99
A really great little album on the short-lived, Bob Thiele-run Contact label that collects rare early work by Shelly Manne from 1944! The set features a series of New York recordings with Shelly – 4 tracks with the Barney Bigard Trio with Eddie Heywood on piano; 4 more with the Eddie ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Hancock

Fat Albert Rotunda
Warner, 1969. Sealed
A crucial record in the career of keyboard legend Herbie Hancock – the first session in which he really gets all-out funky, but in a way that's different than his spacier jams to come in the 70s! At some level, the album links the early soul jazz modes of Herbie's first few Blue Note ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1957. Sealed
Trumpeter Louis Smith made only two records for Blue Note, but both of them are great! This set's arguably his most famous – because of a rare uncredited appearance by Cannonball Adderley, working here under the "nom de date" of "Buckshot La Funke" – and blowing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sun Ra

Cosmos
Inner City, 1976. Sealed
One of the best-remembered Sun Ra albums from the 70s – a really cool little session that features Ra playing the unusual "rocksichord" all the way through! The instrument's a very weird one – kind of like a messed-up electric piano, with lots of cool broken notes and a weird ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Kind Of Blue
Columbia, 1959. Very Good-
What can we say? This is the ultimate Miles Davis album – the one that includes so many songs that we've heard way too much in Starbucks, in retail stores, or at a friend's house who claims to be a "jazz expert", but is really a yuppie dilettante. Yet somehow, over all the years, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Horace Silver

Further Explorations
Blue Note, 1958. Near Mint-
One of the most fantastic Horace Silver albums from the 50s – a set of complicated tunes that really lives up to its "further explorations" title! The session's a perfect example of the way that Silver was mixing hard bop sensibilities with more exotic styles of arranging in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Harriott

Free Form
Jazzland, 1961. Sealed
Essential! This is the landmark album that forever put saxophonist Joe Harriott on the map, and it's a brilliant batch of tracks that prove that Harriott was advancing the jazz avant garde in England as much as players like Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor were advancing it in America. Despite ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Evans

Trio '65
Verve, 1965. Sealed Gatefold
Fantastic Verve Records material from Bill Evans – a set that follows the no-nonsense trio style of his Riverside material, but which definitely shows the evolving Evans style of the 60s! The group here is a nicely mellow one – bassist Chuck Israels, whose sound is tremendous – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Wide Hive, 2020. Sealed
