Music Of My Mind

LP (Item 28564) Tamla, 1972 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
A pivotal album from Stevie Wonder – one of his first really heady records, and a tremendous little set from start to finish! The Wonder heard here is light years from the simple pop of the early days – really stretching out both as a songwriter and musician – coming up with a richly spiritual sound that's completely amazing. Stevie also produced the record himself – and takes his talents to the next level in the effort – layering sounds together beautifully, and making them come out with a crystal clear realization of his new musical vision. A wonderful place to start digging Stevie Wonder – with the killer classics "Superwoman" and "I Love Every Little Thing About You" – plus "Love Having You Around", "Seems So Long", "Girl Blue", and "Happier Than The Morning Sun".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Brown and yellow label pressing with black text and GMB etch. Vinyl is great, but has a short click on side one. Cover has a very small bumped corner, but is nice too.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Stevie Wonder

Innervisions
Tamla, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
One of the best Stevie Wonder albums ever! Stevie's moving into god-like territory here – handling a multitude of styles, all well, and crafting some of the most sophisticated soul of his generation. The album's got the same jazzy references you'll find on the best work by Donny Hathaway ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stevie Wonder

Songs In The Key Of Life
Tamla, 1976. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A sweet little double LP – one that had some folks saying that Stevie should have stayed away from the "2LP syndrome", but for us a real treasure with lots of hidden gems. Besides the hits "Isn't She Lovely" and "Sir Duke", which were more than enough to carry ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marvin Gaye

I Want You
Tamla, 1976. Very Good
An incredible record – quite possibly our favorite ever by Marvin Gaye! The album is quite unique – written by Leon Ware, and recorded in collaboration with him – done as a "suite" of tracks based on themes of passion, joy, and new love – all of which were very ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marvelettes

Marvelettes
Tamla, 1967. Very Good+
Classic stuff from the girls who emerged to become one of Motown's best groups of the late 60s years. The set features the group's great version of "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game", still a big cut on the Chi-town steppers scene – plus a number of other covers and lesser ... Smokey Robinson

Big Time
Tamla, 1977. Sealed
A Smokey Robinson soundtrack to a film that's scarcely remembered – but Smokey's songs are great, his singing passionate and soulful, and the songs work well in a number of soul modes! Some of the material approaches a rave up gospel soul mode, with church ready organs and chorus vocals ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smokey Robinson

Smokey's Family Robinson
Tamla, 1976. Sealed
Smokey's Family Robinson finds Smokey exploring rather than simply setting out to continue riding the waves made by Quiet Storm. There's bits of dancefloor funk, pared down keyboard soul, spacey jams and a sweet ballad or two – all with Smokey's soul strirring vocals in peak form. Titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Time Out
Tamla, 1969. Very Good+
Kind of a mixed bag of numbers from Smokey and the group – who are clearly searching around here for a new sound that will take them into the 70s, working in a number of different modes – all of them still pretty nice, thanks to the always-great vocal talents of the group. Titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jon Lucien

Song For My Lady
Columbia, 1975. Near Mint-
Excellent jazzy soul stuff by one of our favorite singers of all time! Jon's in wonderful form here – working in arrangements that are a bit smoother and more modern soul oriented than his earlier work for RCA, but handled in such a way that they only bring out more richness in his ... LP, Vinyl record album

Esther Marrow

Sister Woman
Fantasy, 1972. Near Mint-
Very righteous work from Esther Marrow – an overlooked soul singer who works with a hell of a lot of pride and power! The set's an overlooked gem in the Fantasy catalog of the 70s, and it's one of only two secular soul albums cut by Marrow – and quite possibly the best of the bunch, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler & Brenda Lee Eager

Love We Have
Mercury, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
Duets between Jerry Butler and Brenda Lee Eager – done as serious, adult oriented soul tracks, one side of the album in an optimistic "The Love We Have" setting, the other in a sadder "The Love We Had" setting – both of them handled in a mode that's far far different ... LP, Vinyl record album

Carrie Lucas

Horsin Around
MCA/Constellation, 1984. Near Mint-
A surprisingly nice set from Carrie – produced with a bit of an electro flourish on the keys, and lots of sweet Solar production from labelmates like Reggie Calloway, Bill Wolfer, and the enigmatic Fenderella. Titles include "Hello Stranger", "Somebody Said", "Superst ... LP, Vinyl record album
