A landmark album from the great Ron Carter – one of those key 70s sides where he was able to show the world that he was way more than just a jazz bassist – and instead a sophisticated musical genius with so much to offer! Ron's bass is certainly a key part of the set – he plays both acoustic and electric, plus piccolo bass too – but the real appeal is his larger sense of arrangement, especially his ear for tone and timing – both of which are very unique here, and emerge from the well-led performances by Kenny Barron on piano, Don Grolnick on Rhodes, Hugh McCracken on guitar, and Billy Cobham on drums – a lineup that shifts a bit throughout the set, to match the mood of the music on each selection.
