❔
The Isley Brothers on Motown – a really key step forward for the group, who find a whole new level of soul with help from the Holland Dozier Holland team! There's a warmth here missing from previous Isleys material – that rough edge that was more part of their rocking years, softened a bit to let the vocals really take off with straightforward power – that mix of raw energy and sublime precision they'd explore later on the T-Neck years – helped strongly here by the Motown influence. Titles include the massive hit "This Old Heart Of Mine", plus "Take Some Time Out for Love", "Baby Don't You Do It", "Nowhere To Run", "Put Yourself In My Place", "Seek & You Shall Find", and "Who Could Ever Doubt My Love".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Motown reissue pressing. Cover has a cutout notch and light wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Make It Happen
Tamla, 1967. Very Good
A romping groover from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles – and a record that really has them punching things up, after starting out for Motown as a much more mellow harmony group! Robinson's crackling lead really makes the set sparkle – that warm, honest, earnest quality that Smokey ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stevie Wonder

Hotter Than July
Tamla, 1980. Very Good+ Gatefold
A bit smoother than early days, but still very nice and soulful – and did we expect any less from Stevie? The record's got a nicely flanged-out soul groove – with a style that kind of expands on the vocal and keyboard production of the early 70s, taking the groove towards a sound that ... Stevie Wonder

Songs In The Key Of Life
Tamla, 1976. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A sweet little double LP – one that had some folks saying that Stevie should have stayed away from the "2LP syndrome", but for us a real treasure with lots of hidden gems. Besides the hits "Isn't She Lovely" and "Sir Duke", which were more than enough to carry ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thelma Houston

Any Way You Like It
Tamla, 1976. Very Good+
Smoking Motown work from Thelma Houston – a great 70s set that catches the singer at the top of her groove! The album's polished, but never in a too-commercial way – and the grooves acknowledge the growing role of the dancefloor in mainstream soul, yet also mostly stay away from some ... Going To A Go Go
Tamla, 1965. Very Good-

Marvin Gaye

Moods Of Marvin Gaye
Tamla, 1966. Very Good+
The moods of Marvin Gaye are many, even at this early point in his career – as the set has the young Marvin really taking off strongly – hitting hard on classic Motown groovers, but also showing a sensitive side at times too! The album kicks off with some killer rhythms on cuts like ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chic

C'est Chic
Atlantic, 1978. Near Mint-
A massive set from the legendary Chic – and a set that has the dancefloor combo coming down perfectly throughout!
