Circling In

LP (Item 28312) Blue Note, 1968/1970 — Condition: Sealed
2LP Gatefold
Also available
Chick Corea — Circling In ... CD 28.99

Groundbreaking early work from pianist Chick Corea – a set of unissued material that's very different than much of what he'd record during his later, more successful years! The set's especially noteworthy in that it features the amazing pairing of Chick and AACM reed genius Anthony Braxton – working together here during the short space of time when they were together in the group Circle, and really making some sublime sounds together! Some of the tracks feature a trio – Chick on piano, Braxton on clarinets and alto, and Dave Holland on guitar, cello, and bass – and some feature the full Circle lineup, with the addition of Barry Altschul on drums and percussion. The package also features some other unique early sides – a trio track with Altschul and Holland, and a few more trio tracks with Miroslav Vitous on bass and Roy Haynes on drums – equally groundbreaking, but in a different sort of way. Titles include "Duet for Bass & Piano", "Bossa", "Gemini", "Starp", "Chimes", "Danse For Clarinet & Piano", and "Samba Yanta".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original 70s pressing – sealed! Cover has a cut corner, and shrink is open a tiny bit in one spot – but very nice overall.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Chick Corea

My Spanish Heart
Polydor, 1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Given that Chick Corea first got his start working in the New York Latin scene back in the 60s, the album's a bit of a return to his roots – even if the general theme here is Spanish, and not Afro-Cuban! The Corea Spanish Heart here is cast in some darker, more contemplative tones than more ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1964. Very Good+
A jazz classic if there ever was one – and the best-selling album ever by Lee Morgan, thanks to the use of the title track in a car commercial! Sure, you've probably heard "The Sidewinder" enough that you think you know the album already – but the rest of the tunes really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Grant Green

Alive!
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good-
A really fantastic album from guitarist Grant Green – a set that's every bit as great as his other Blue Note funk albums from the time – but in a very different way! First off, the group has vibes – played by the more obscure Willie Bivens, sometimes with this hard chromatic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lou Donaldson

Sassy Soul Strut
Blue Note, 1973. Sealed
Plenty of sass, and plenty of soul – a great mix of modes from the mighty Lou Donaldson! The set has Lou expanding his sound a bit from the harder funk of Blue Note dates from a few years before – working with arranger George Butler, who gives the record a cool electric vibe – ... Blue Note, Mid 40s/Late 50s. Very Good
Blue Note LP that compiles a bunch of Sidney Bechet's classic 78rpm sides for the label – most of which were recorded during the mid 40s, in a variety of different settings. Titles include "Up In Sidney's Flat", "High Society", "Jackass Blues", "Old Stack O' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd

New Perspective
Blue Note, 1963. Very Good-
A classic album that mixes trumpet and voices in a swirling soulful sound that worked very well for Byrd's career! John Patton

Accent On The Blues
Blue Note, 1969. Very Good
One of the last John Patton albums for Blue Note, and one of the best. A young James "Blood" Ulmer's on guitar, and Marvin Cabell (who we only know from Patton LPs) is on tenor and flute. The sound is deep and soulful, and despite the "accent on the blues" of the title, the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Grant Green

Grantstand
Blue Note, Early 60s. Sealed
An early moment of genius from the great Grant Green – a set that's a real standout from his other Blue Note albums of the time – even though all of those are plenty darn great as well! Grant's working here with an unusual group – Yusef Lateef on tenor and flute, making a rare ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley Turrentine

Straight Ahead
Blue Note, 1984. Near Mint-
One of the big stars of Blue Note Records in the 60s, still sounding great here on the revived version of the label in the 80s! Stan's look on the cover may be a bit Cosby Show, but his sound on the tenor is mighty classic throughout – backed by Hammond from Jimmy Smith on most cuts, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Out Of The Blue

Live At Mt. Fuji
Blue Note, 1987. Near Mint-
A nice live set by this all-star group – recorded in Japan, with Ralph Brown on tenor, Michael Phillip Mossman on trumpet, Kenny Garrett on alto, Harry Pickens on piano, Kenny Davis on bass, and Ralph Peterson on drums! LP, Vinyl record album

Brian Auger

Straight Ahead
RCA, 1974. Very Good
Long lean groovers from Brian Auger and the Oblivion Express group – recorded with a slightly freer feel than some of the group's earlier albums, and an approach that has them stretching out nicely!
