Big Daddy's Place

LP (Item 28265) ABC, 1977 — Condition: Near Mint-
After working for years in the Crusaders, then honing his production skills with excellent work for Fantasy and Mercury, Wayne Henderson put out this album of his own, which drew on a lot of the work he'd been doing during the mid 70s. The album's a showcase for his At Home productions team, and it features work by Bobby Lyle, Roland Bautista, Ronnie Laws, and others. Henderson plays trombone, but he also gets in the way a bit with some hipster vocalizing that doesn't quite work. Titles include "Lady Bug", "Foot Stompin Music", "I'm Staying Forever", and a version of the great stepper "Keep On Keepin On".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cutout notch and is bent at the top right corner.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Rufus featuring Chaka Khan

Rags To Rufus
ABC, 1974. Near Mint-
One of those records that everyone seemed to own, back in the day – and for good reason, too – as Rufus and Chaka have a way of opening ears of folks who dig so many different styles – from soul to rock to funk and jazz – but all with a groove that's totally their own! Charles Wright

Ninety Day Cycle People
ABC, 1974. Very Good+
Wild work by Charles Wright – recorded in the post-103rd Street Rhythm Band years, with a really trippy sound! The album's got a few really messed up numbers – ones that have Charles ranting and grooving with incredible energy, especially on the cuts "90 Day Cycle People" and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clarence Carter

Real
ABC, 1974. Very Good
Funny that they'd call this one "real", as it's probably the least rootsy of Clarence's albums from the early 70s. Not that that's a problem, though, because McKinley Jackson and Paul Riser handled the arrangements with a style that's very similar to some of Lamont Dozier's work for ABC ... LP, Vinyl record album

A classic! What seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius, and the result was the most successful album of his career – and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impressions

One By One
ABC, 1965. Near Mint-
Classic 60s Impressions material, with the legendary lineup firmly in place, and the great Johnny Pate handling all arrangements – really giving them that sense of righteous power that pushed their music past a lot of the previous group soul sounds of the Chicago scene – with a ... ABC, Late 60s. Near Mint-
More beautiful soul from one of the best (and most overlooked) groups of the 60's! The Tams sing in a unique raw harmony style that mixes southern and northern influences, and their records (like this one) are filled with great material that was written for the band. Most of these cuts have great ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rufus & Chaka Khan

Street Player
ABC, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold
Stunning work from Rufus & Chaka Khan – still very much at the height of their powers on this late 70s release – and still doing things at a level that nobody else can touch! Soulful Strings

Paint It Black
Cadet, 1966. Near Mint-
One of the better albums by this great Chicago soul studio group – but all of them are pretty nice! The great Richard Evans is still at the head of The Strings, and the album features solo work by Charles Stepney and Lennie Druss, in a cool breezy Chess/Cadet soul jazz kind of mode. The ... Oliver Cheatham sounds wonderful here – in that best bouncy style that made him a big favorite on the dancefloors in the early 80s – a groove that's still pretty darn great all these years later!
