❔

Excellent Verve album that Cal recorded with the great Clare Fischer on organ and piano. Clare's organ work on here is stellar, and he's got this cool little spare sound that works very well with Cal's vibes. The set includes a great version of "Sally's Tomato", plus the cuts "Hip Walk", "O Barquinho", and "Insight".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono MGM pressing.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Cal Tjader

Primo
Fantasy, 1973. Very Good+
A really hard-hitting set from Cal Tjader – and one that's done with a good dose of 60s Latin Soul as well! The album was recorded in the early 70s, but it's really got a late 60s New York flavor – thanks to arrangers Charlie Palmieri and Tito Puente – who cook up a groove that's ... Cal Tjader

Live & Direct
Fantasy, 1959. Sealed
Great live work from Cal Tjader – one of a number of sets but at his home turf of the Blackhawk Nightclub in San Francisco! The album's nicely laidback, with tracks that stretch out a bit more than Tjader's studio work for Fantasy Records – often hitting a slight Latin groove at times, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader

Tjader Plays Mambo
Fantasy, Late 50s. Very Good-
Classic 50s west coast Latin grooves – played by Cal and a tasty Bay Area combo that includes Benny Velarde on timbales and conga, Manuel Duran on piano, and Carlos Duran on bass! The tracks are short, but have a tight group feel – really driving in a nicely rhythmic mode, with some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Warm Wave
Verve, Mid 60s. Sealed Gatefold
A mighty nice pairing – the vibes of Cal Tjader and the sophisticated arrangements of Claus Ogerman – who definitely ensures that the album's the warm wave promised in the title! Fantasy, 1955/1957. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A 2-in-1 Latin jazz spectacular from the mighty Cal Tjader! First up is the album Ritmo Caliente – one of Tjader's first Latin-tinged sessions for Fantasy Records – and a really wonderful batch of tracks recorded with a shifting array of very hip players! Cal Tjader

Tjader
Fantasy, Late 60s. Very Good+
An excellent album from legendary vibist Cal Tjader – and one of his truly electric albums! A key factor to the greatness of this one is keyboardist Al Zulaica – who plays some amazing Fender Rhodes on the album, really unlocking a whole new sound of Cal's vibes in the process! The ... Verve, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
Unlike the mellower Breeze from the East LP (another Tjader "eastern" session), this one's got some very lively Latiny stuff – despite the orientalist theme of the LP. There's a monster version of Horace Silver's "Tokyo Blues", plus takes of Lalo Schifrin's "The ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1965. Near Mint-
A real classic by Cal – one of the trademark albums of his time at Verve, and a unique blend of jazz, Latin, and other groovy influences! The tunes have that lightly jazzy approach that made Cal a hit with the radio and jukebox crowds at the time – a bossa-influenced mix of vibes, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Getz/Gilberto
Verve, 1963. Very Good- Gatefold
A landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Early 50s. Near Mint-
A late 50s album that issues some killer combo material by Bird! Tracks are short ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1964. Very Good Gatefold
Although Gil Evans is probably best remembered for his work behind Miles Davis, the albums he cut on his own are actually even more interesting, and feature a far-reaching conception of modern jazz, executed by Evans, and some of the top players of his day. This great album from 1964 features a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Guitar Forms
Verve, 1965. Very Good Gatefold
Surprisingly wonderful work from Kenny! The album has Kenny's guitar set to arrangements by Gil Evans – who gives the session a modern edge that really sets it apart from other Burrell albums of the time.
