Cool Velvet – Stan Getz & Strings

LP (Item 28200) Verve, Mid 50s — Condition: Very Good
An incredibly haunting session that has Stan's edgey alto fronting some of Russ Garcia's arch-modernist string arrangements – similar to those that he contributed to other Verve albums of the same style. Getz maintains a wonderfully breathy tone that floats above the orchestrations, and the album's a real winner that shows a side of Stan that wasn't always captured by Verve. Titles include "Round Midnight", "Nature Boy", "It Never Entered My Mind", and "Early Autumn".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono Verve pressing with deep groove. Cover has split top & bottom seams, and the bottom 2 inches or so is stained with wear - and is peeled on the back cover.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Dolphin
Concord, 1981. Near Mint-
One of the best later moments from the great Stan Getz – a set we might even place on the same level as his 60s work for Verve – and certainly at the same par as his records in the 70s for Columbia! Yet this set is quite different than that latter batch – as it has Getz really ... LP, Vinyl record album
Roost, Early 50s. Very Good+
Beautiful early bop material by Getz – recorded at Storyville with a crack little combo that includes Al Haig on piano and Jimmy Raney on guitar. The Raney/Getz sound is a great one – with Raney's jangly guitar notes providing a nice edge for Getz's smoother alto. Titles include " ... LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful bit of lost Getz from the 60s – a record of incredible depth that's somehow gotten lost in the shuffle of time! Stan Getz Plays
Verve, Early 50s. Near Mint-
Pure genius from Stan Getz – a set that's got an understated brilliance from the cover and title right down to the music in the grooves – and maybe one of the best-ever pairings of the tenor of Getz with the guitar of Jimmy Raney! The pair work here in a hip combo with Duke Jordan on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1955. Very Good
Stan Getz makes a key musical trip to Sweden – to showcase his affection for a jazz scene that had been growing strongly in the postwar years – often in directions that were similar to Stan's own sound at the time! Verve, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Cal cut so many great sides for Verve during the 60s, it's hard to imagine how anyone could come up with a "best of" – but this album fits the bill nicely, and includes a number of solid groover and Latin jazz tracks that fit just right! Includes "Sake & Greens", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Coleman Hawkins & Ben Webster

Coleman Hawkins Encounters Ben Webster

A classic set in the best Verve Records mode – as these two mature giants of the tenor sax get lots of room to open up and solo with a great rhythm section at the core!
