Breezing

LP (Item 28196) Jazzland, 1960 — Condition: Very Good

A real winner from Sonny Red's initial burst upon the New York scene – and a great mix of soul jazz and hardbop, all augmented by Red's wonderful tone! The group's a sextet, in the tight Jazzland style – and players include Barry Harris, Blue Mitchell, and Yusef Lateef. Tracks are relatively short, but solos are precise – and a few of the cuts feature Red as the only main soloist. Titles include "Ditty", "The New Blues", "Brother B", and "Teef".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Orange label mono Bill Grauer Productions Inc pressing with deep groove. Cover has some edge wear, with a few stains on back, nothing major.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Red Garland

Bright & Breezy
Jazzland, 1961. Very Good+
Bright, breezy, and plenty darn soulful – a nice little post-Prestige album that almost has Red Garland returning to the piano with the tightest focus of his earlier years! The trio here features Sam Jones on bass and Charlie Persip on drums – both of whom punctuate the groove with the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Jazzland, 1961. Very Good
A killer set of grooves from vibes legend Johnny Lytle – one of the first and one of the few to ever combine vibes with Hammond organ – in this case, the work of Milt Harris on the keys! The group is a very rhythmic trio, thanks to Harris on the bass pedals, and Penny Hinant on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rene Thomas

Guitar Groove
Jazzland, 1960. Near Mint-
Belgian guitarist Rene Thomas was one of the few players to break out of the postwar Paris jazz scene and actually get to record in America – and on this classic set from 1960, he's grooving with a very hip group that includes JR Monterose on tenor, Hod O'Brien on piano, and the rhythm ... Clifford Jordan

Starting Time
Jazzland, 1961. Sealed
A great early Clifford Jordan record, and a tight bit of jazz from this great Chicago tenor player. Another Chicago favorite, Wilbur Ware, is on bass, and a young Cedar Walton's playing piano, and with warmth like that, Jordan and trumpeter Kenny Dorham sound great next to each other. Loads of ... Jazzland, Late 40s. Near Mint-
First volume of sessions originally recorded for radio on acetates, then transferred to tape in 1961 and released as 2 albums on the Jazzland label in the early 60s. The sides are noteworthy in that they offer some important early performances by Navarro – working with the Tadd Dameron band ... LP, Vinyl record album

Les Spann

Gemini
Jazzland, 1961. Near Mint-
One of the few albums ever cut as a leader by Les Spann – an extremely talented jazz player who worked a lot with Dizzy Gillespie in the 50s, and Quincy Jones in the 60s! Les plays both guitar and flute on the set – grooving soulfully in a mode that recalls the stylings of Frank Wess ... LP, Vinyl record album
Jazzland, 1960. Near Mint-
Excellent work from Oscar Pettiford – his last sessions, in case you couldn't tell by the title, recorded in Copenhagen in 1959 and 1960, with players that include Allan Botchinsky on trumpet, Jan Johansson on piano, Erik Nordstrom on tenor, and Luis Hjulmand on vibes. Despite the ... LP, Vinyl record album

J & K (JJ Johnson & Kai Winding)

Betwixt & Between
A&M, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great album of smooth jazzy numbers recorded for CTI – with a nice luster that actually makes the album a lot more compelling than some of JJ and Kai's other work together. The album features some great big band arrangements of strong material, including Edu Lobo's "Casa Forte" ... LP, Vinyl record album
Contemporary, 1957. Good
One of Art Pepper's classic recordings, in which he plays with a spare quartet backing by Miles Davis' rhythm section at the time – Paul Chambers, Red Garland, and Philly Joe Jones. An essential East meets West jazz recording, with Art at the top of his game, playing in a unique setting for ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto

Getz/Gilberto
Verve, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
A landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Three Sounds

Vibrations
Blue Note, 1966. Very Good+
A pivotal album from the Three Sounds – one that has the group moving past the straighter trio format of their initial Blue Note sides, really hinting at the funkier sounds to come on their classic albums of the late 60s! Gene Harris is definitely taking a page from the Ramsey Lewis bag at ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto

Getz/Gilberto #2
Verve, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
A very different record than the first collaboration between Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto – but that's also one of the things that makes it great! The album's more of a split LP than a shared one – as side one features a live performance from the great mid 60s Stan Getz quartet that ... LP, Vinyl record album
