❔

A classic! What seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius, and the result was the most successful album of his career – and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful arrangements by Gil Fuller, Marty Paich, and Gerald Wilson, the whole thing comes off to perfection. Titles include "You Don't Know Me", "I Can't Stop Lovin You", "Careless Love", "You Win Again", and "Worried Mind".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono pressing.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Tangerine/ABC, 1972. Very Good+
A righteous early 70s set from Ray Charles – and a record with a much deeper vibe than you might guess from the image of Ray and some kids on the cover! Arrangements were handled by Quincy Jones, Sid Feller, and Mike Post – and the record is kind of a 70s take on the fuller modes that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Charles

Great Ray Charles
Atlantic, Late 50s. Very Good+
More of a jazz album than the early vocal singles of Ray Charles – but a set that definitely is as great as promised by the title! Ray's in the lead on piano – taking some strong solos, and showing us what a sensitive phraseologist he can be when needed – really showcasing that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dixie Cups

Riding High
ABC, 1965. Sealed
Classic New Orleans soul by this great girl group – much rawer than some of their more easily available recordings, and with great arrangements and music by Joe Jones! Sort of the rolling funky soul sound that Lee Dorsey and others made more famous, with the cuts "What Goes Up, Must ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lamont Dozier

Black Bach
ABC, 1974. Very Good
One of Lamont Dozier's true 70s classics – an amazing album of baroque soul with an undeniable groove – kind of the best aspects of Detroit soul, wrapped up together! The arrangements here are fantastic – a mix of strings and soul that surpasses any of Lamont's previous albums, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Angelo Bond

Bondage
ABC, 1975. Very Good+
We've got to admit, we don't know much about Angelo Bond, but we've always had kind of a soft spot for this nice overlooked album of 70s soul tracks recorded for ABC. The arrangements are by McKinley Jackson and Paul Riser, and the tracks are a nice mix of 70s soul themes – with some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Pate/Four Tops

Shaft In Africa
ABC, 1973. Very Good+
One of the greatest blacksploitation soundtracks ever – a massively beautiful record that goes beyond any cliches of the genre, and serves up a fantastically unique batch of tracks! Chisoul arranger Johnny Pate did the music for the film – and (dare we say it?) it's even greater that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sheer Elegance

Sheer Elegance
ABC, 1976. Very Good+
A strange little soul group from the UK – one that has a mix of influences that include Jamaican soul, American pop, and even a bit of gospel. The overall sound is a bit strange, but kind of spiritually warm in the best parts, with a message-related approach to soul. Titles include "Pea ... LP, Vinyl record album

Solomon Burke

I Have A Dream
ABC, 1974. Very Good+
Surprisingly nice work! Like the rest of Solomon's post-Atlantic LPs, this one has a sound that's different than his classic work, but which also exposes a whole new side of his talent, and range of vocals that didn't always show up for Atlantic. Solomon arranged and produced here, and the sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impressions

One By One
ABC, 1965. Very Good-
Classic 60s Impressions material, with the legendary lineup firmly in place, and the great Johnny Pate handling all arrangements – really giving them that sense of righteous power that pushed their music past a lot of the previous group soul sounds of the Chicago scene – with a ... Johnny Pate & His Orchestra

Set A Pattern
ABC, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Fantastic funky orchestral stuff from this great Chicago soul arranger! Johnny was working with The Impressions during these years, but ABC gave him a chance to cut some instrumental sides on his own – and the record's a wonderful groover with some complicated numbers that remind us a bit of ...
