Spankin' Brand New

LP (Item 28036) Mothers Records, Late 60s — Condition: Very Good

Heavy soul from the great Spanky Wilson – an album that explodes with energy right from the start – in a groove that definitely lives up to the title! Spanky's got a great mix of funk and class on this set – a punch in the rhythms at points, yet also a poise in the way she delivers the lyrics – a blend that's a bit like Marlena Shaw in her earlier years – and set to some killer arrangements from the great HB Barnum! Barnum gives the record all the cool punch of his great 60s work with Lou Rawls – and nearly all the material was written by the obscure Howlett Smith – an excellent lost writer who had a real talent for coming up with cool little soul songs that rise above the usual bag of his generation. This material works great for Spanky, and together, the pair, along with Barnum, cook up a unique lost soul treat! Titles include "Apartment 101", "On The Morning After", "The Other Girl", "You're Gonna Miss Me", "Love Has Me By The Hand", and "Mighty Great Feeling".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing with deep groove. Cover has a light name on the back.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Joe Simon
Buddah, Mid 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint-
Buddah issue of some material that Joe recorded earlier that was released on the Vee Jay label before his big Sound Stage 7 hits. If you don't know the material, it's got a nice raw sound, and more of a southern soul feel than his later work (although that was pretty darn good, too). The tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hmmm. . . When's this stuff from? It appears to be the late 60s – at least from the sound, which is hard and funky in the best parts. The two best tracks are instrumentals – "Thinking Black", which has a muddled up drum and horn sound that's very nice, and "Funky ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rise Sleeping Beauty
Motown, 1975. Near Mint-
One of Lenny's first solo records – rawer than later work, thanks probably to the fact that he produced the record with Chester Thompson.
