Gettin' Together

LP (Item 2800) Jazzland, 1960 — Condition: Used
Temporarily Out Of Stock

LP, Vinyl record album

Hard edged jazz stuff, featuring the great tenorist in a spare (and rare) setting away from Duke Ellington's band. Wynton Kelly, Jimmy Cobb, Nat Adderley, and Sam Jones lay down a nice soulful groove with a deep bottom, and Gonsalves plays with warmth and imagination throughout. The set includes two of Babs Gonzales' great compositions: "Low Gravy" and "Gettin' Together". (OJC pressing.)  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Griff & Lock
Jazzland, 1961. Very Good
Classic tenors head-to-head – as Griff & Lock lay out one of their excellent 2 tenor classics from the early 60s! The rhythm section's deeply soulful – with Junior Mance on piano, Larry Gales on bass, and Ben Riley on drums – and the album grooves through some long blowers, a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazzland, 1961. Very Good+
Nice and rarely seen trio side from under-recorded Chicago pianist Anderson. He plays here with Bill Lee and either Walter Perkins or Philly Joe Jones on drums, in a trio that made the core of the rhythm section on Frank Strozier's excellent Jazzland date, Long Night. The group is in fine form ... LP, Vinyl record album

Feels So Good
Kudu, 1975. Very Good
An incredible batch of electric funk from Grover Washington Jr – easily one of his best albums ever! The record really picks up from the sweet CTI sound of the 70s – taking Bob James arrangements with a lot of space and electric keyboards, and letting Groover blow some wonderfully ... Coltrane Plays The Blues
Atlantic, 1960. Near Mint-
Coltrane plays the blues, but in a way like nobody else – stepping off of the deeply soulful sound of his late Prestige years, and moving into even more open and exploratory space for Atlantic! The setting is bare bones and simple – and many of these numbers begin with the sort of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chisa, 1970. Very Good- Gatefold
Wickedly funky work from the Jazz Crusaders – a pivotal set that has them electrifying their groove a bit more from the 60s, yet still not hitting the smother sound of later years! The core soul jazz mode of the group's start is still nicely in place – hard-hitting grooves from Wayne ... LP, Vinyl record album

Echoes Of Blue
Atlantic, Late 60s/1976. Near Mint-
A great collection of Freddie's late 60s recordings for Atlantic – some of the best tracks pulled from the albums Backlash and High Blues Pressure! Nuther Fu'ther
Prestige, 1962. Very Good
Stitt & McDuff in a very tasty set of organ/tenor grooves, played with that style that Prestige was finally beginning to perfect in the early 60s, as it let these organ combos shake off their 50's R&B sound, and start to hit a straighter jazz groove. Best Of Cal Tjader
Verve, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Cal cut so many great sides for Verve during the 60s, it's hard to imagine how anyone could come up with a "best of" – but this album fits the bill nicely, and includes a number of solid groover and Latin jazz tracks that fit just right! Includes "Sake & Greens", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Portrait Of Jenny
Perception, 1971. Very Good-
A sweet slow and groovy funk LP recorded by Dizzy for the Perception label! The record is similar to his other LPs from the time in that it's got a cool electric feel that you don't really associate with Diz. The whole album has a sly sweet funky sound that's part CTI/part Latin-tinged Dizzy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Done It Again
Pacific Jazz, Late 60s. Very Good- Gatefold
Very very very groovy stuff by this masterful jazz vibist, recorded with a sort of late 60s swingin' feel – but still very much in the pocket and warm as a summer breeze! Lytle has a pretty remarkable way of playing the vibes with speed and energy, yet the overall feel still has kind of a ... LP, Vinyl record album
