Nice mellow fusion from Monty, recorded in LA with a group that includes Ernest Ranglin on guitar, plus Andy Simpkins on bass, and added drums and percussion from 4 other players. There's a bit of steel drums on the record, in the style that Alexander was using on other MPS sides from the time – and the tracks have a nice mellow funky feel to them. Titles include 'Mango Rengue", "Jamento", "Sugarloaf At Twilight", "Slippery", and "Accompong". (Cover has a residue spot from an old sticker.)  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pablo, 1980. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A great long live set – very extended tracks, blown soulfully by Freddie Hubbard in that excellent return to basics mode he hit at the start of the 80s! The group is a killer quintet – with David Schnitter on tenor and Billy Childs on keyboards. LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy's Party
Pablo, 1977. Near Mint-
Pretty wonderful funky work from Dizzy! The record's an excellent example of the messed-up funk groove that Diz was hitting at the time – a groove that he's never really given credit for, and which kept his records interesting long into the decade. Although the set's on Pablo, it's got more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pablo, 1976. Near Mint-
An obscure set by guitarist Al Gafa – one of the few electric sides on Pablo during the 70s, and like the rest of the time, a strongly soulful and laidback session. Al's playing guitar with a quintet that includes some nice keyboard work by Kenny Barron – who plays both acoustic and ... LP, Vinyl record album

A great 70s album by Roland Kirk – one that features him working on a lot of short tracks, in a pretty crazy style! A number of the tracks feature Kirk's uniquely quirky reed style in full effect – often processed with added studio techniques, in a very nice way. And along side that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quite possibly the most celebrated album ever from keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith – a groove-heavy classic that's burned up many a dancefloor in its day, yet also a record that features some great mellow moments as well! Blue Note, Late 60s. Very Good+
A real treasure through and through – one of the most unusual Blue Note albums you'll ever hear, and a set that's one of the best-remembered from the team of pianist Jack Wilson and vibist Roy Ayers!
