❔
The second issue of an album that was originally issued under the name of leader Mal Waldron – and a real Prestige Records gem from the early 60s! The set is pivotal work from pianist Mal Waldron – stepping out of the blowing session mode, emerging as one of the 60s most striking modernists! The set shows an amazing desire for new forms and ideas – and features a stunning lineup that's overflowing with creative talent – Eric Dolphy on alto and bass clarinet, Booker Ervin on tenor, Ron Carter on cello, Joe Benjamin on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums! Carter plays bowed cello, as he did on Dolphy's Out There session, and he gives the set a dark moody feel. Ervin's in his best modernist mode, and he ably trades lines with Dolphy and keeps the whole thing moving nicely. Waldron's writing and arranging is superb, and the tracks feature a lot of weird time structures and unusual modal patterns. Includes the tracks "Status Seeking", "Warm Canto", "Warp and Woof", and "Fire Waltz".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue label pressing, with Van Gelder stamp – a nice copy! Cover has some very light wear, and a promo stamp on the back.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prestige, 1963. Very Good
A real classic from the 60s soul jazz years at Prestige Records – an album of work by some of the label's best talents of the late 50s and early 60s, all edited down to shorter 45-type takes! One of those 70s two-fers where Prestige went back and decided dicing up all those sessions in the 50s and 60s didn't make as much sense as issuing them as the way they went down.
