Flying Start

LP (Item 2760) Fantasy, 1974 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
Also available
Blackbyrds — Flying Start ... LP 16.99
Not the band's first album – as you might think from the "start" in the title – but a classic batch of jazzy, funky, and soulful grooves from The Blackbyrds – one of those combos that few groups could match back in the 70s! The set's got a beautifully put-together feel – tight enough to crossover somewhat big with a larger audience than the group's previous effort – but still filled with the kind of righteous energy that first got them going, a sublime mix of jazzy rhythms and soulful elements, all held together tightly by production from Donald Byrd. Tracks include the big hit "Walking In Rhythm", which was an oft-spun 45 back in the day – plus some great funk moments, like the tasty "Spaced Out", the choppy "The Baby", and the captivating "Blackbyrds Theme". Other cuts include "Future Children Future Hopes", "I Need You", and "April Showers".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sylvester

Sell My Soul
Honey/Fantasy, 1980. Very Good
An overlooked gem from Sylvester's years on Fantasy Records – a set that has him working strongly with soul maestro Harvey Fuqua, in a really great blend of disco and more laidback modes! There's a balance here that's like early Luther at his best – a way of being proudly poised, yet ... LP, Vinyl record album

Betty Everett

Happy Endings
Fantasy, 1975. Near Mint-
Great stuff by Betty – and light years away from her work at Vee Jay! The album was recorded for Fantasy during their golden year of 1975, and it's a smooth batch of sexy soul tunes with arrangements by Gene Page that are very much in a Barry White mid-70s mode. Betty's lyrical stylings are ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown

Showtime
Smash, 1964. Very Good-
One of the odder James Brown records from the 60s – as it includes 11 studio tracks with overdubbed audience. James was under contract with King at the same time, and couldn't record new vocal material for Smash – so the record doesn't contain any JB originals, but covers of Louis ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gladys Knight & The Pips

Nitty Gritty
SOUL, 1969. Very Good
One of our favorite albums by Gladys Knight – a set that seems to have a lot more edge than some of her later work, thanks to some rumbling production from the legendary Norman Whitfield! In a way, Norman's almost applying the Temptations sound to Gladys here – using fuller bass at the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isaac Hayes

Hot Buttered Soul
Enterprise, 1969. Very Good+
Amazing stuff from Isaac Hayes! Although Ike had first appeared on LP with the album "Introducing", this was the first record to really expose his true soul genius – and it was also the first release on Ike's successful sub-label at Stax, Enterprise Records. The record shows that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isaac Hayes

Tough Guys
Enterprise, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of Isaac Hayes' richest soundtracks – deeper and more complicated than the groove of Shaft and Truck Turner, and filled with some great tunes that glow with color, life, and imagination – showing an Isaac Hayes that almost seems to be moving beyond the usual blackploitation groove! ... Warner, 1978. Near Mint- Gatefold
An instant classic the day it was released – and a perfect blending of the group's older freaked-out style with a slick late 70s funk sound that started showing up in the work of many other groups. "One Nation Under A Groove" is a monster cut with a hook that won't quit, and the LP ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tower Of Power

East Bay Grease
San Francisco/Atlantic, 1970. Near Mint-
One of the first albums from Tower Of Power – and one of the funkiest, too – a set that really has the group working in a loose, spontaneous mode that's totally great – steeped in all the best elements of southern soul, but forged with a new sort of energy in the Bay Area scene at ... Edmund Sylvers

Have You Heard
Casablanca, 1980. Near Mint-
A polished bit of LA soul, with lots of jazz players (Fred Jackson, Dorothy Ashby, Bobby Bryant) in the arrangements, and a number of smooth uptempo tracks that don't really make it as well as they might in the hands of another artist. Tracks include "Time", "I Choose You", ... LP, Vinyl record album
