Live At The Sahara Tahoe

LP (Item 27444) Enterprise, 1973 — Condition: Very Good
2LP Gatefold
A stunning live example of Ike's amazing baroque soul for Stax! Despite the schmaltz that you might expect from a live set recorded at Lake Tahoe, the album's a beautiful batch of long tracks with a very similar feel to Ike's other Stax work at the time – and it really gives you an excellent chance to hear how he could create these tiny little masterpieces even in a live setting, without any sort of studio trickery. Titles include "Do Your Thing", "Theme From The Men", "Look Of Love", "Theme From Shaft", "Ike's Rap V", "Windows Of The World", "Ain't No Sunshine", and "Type Thang".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Isaac Hayes

Isaac Hayes Movement
Enterprise, 1970. Near Mint-
Stellar soul from Isaac Hayes – just the sort of overblown masterpiece that made his early solo work on Stax Records so great! The record features only 4 long tracks – all of which go on in that slow-building style that Ike forged at the time – a mode that takes a few simple ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mavis Staples/Curtis Mayfield

Piece Of The Action
Curtom, 1977. Very Good+
One of the last great 70s soundtracks on Curtom Records – a smoking little set that pairs the music of Curtis Mayfield with the vocals of Mavis Staples! Curtis is very much in charge of the record from the start, and works in a hard-stepping and righteous mode that recalls his earlier work ... LP, Vinyl record album

Undisputed Truth

Law Of The Land
Gordy, 1973. Very Good+
An unstoppable groove from The Undisputed Truth – a group who worked with Norman Whitfield in the same psychedelic soul territory as The Temptations – and who arguably got the sound across even better than them! This set's not as much of a bit hit as the group's other records from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Temptations

Wings Of Love
Gordy, 1976. Very Good+
After influencing countless groups of the 70s with their righteous funky soul of the late 60s, the Temps end up sounding kind of silly trying to hit a funk groove like the rest of the other 70s bands. This is the case on side one, where the group's getting some keyboards and funky horn ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pickwick, Mid 60s/1978. Sealed

Carolina Freedom Fighters

Everybody Wants Freedom
Battle, Early 60s. Very Good+
A pretty darn cool album, issued at the height of the civil rights struggle! Prestige, 1964. Very Good+
Gene Ammons really hits a great groove here – one that's not exactly bossa, but which has lots of Latin and tropical touches! Jack Marshall

18th Century Jazz
Capitol, Late 50s. Very Good+
Goofy "18th Century" jazziness, played by a tight west coast studio sextet that features Shelly Mann, Milt Raskin, Harry Klee, and Jack Marshall on guitar. The tracks are jazz standards, but they're given a sort of plucked sound, and layed out with some sort of stepping classical grooves. ... LP, Vinyl record album
