One of our favorite albums ever from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers – but a set that was unreleased by Blue Note for quite a few years! The set's one of two gems the group recorded in 1961, but which were held back until the end of the 60s – and it features a stellar version of the group with Wayne Shorter on tenor, Lee Morgan on trumpet, and Bobby Timmons on piano – all wonderful players who were really coming into their own at the time, and starting to bring a richness to the Messengers sound that would leave its mark in jazz for many years to come! The group is razor-sharp on the rhythms, but also really able to take new chances with their phrasing and timing – on a host of wonderful tracks that include "Those Who Sit & Wait", "The Witch Doctor", and "A Little Busy" – all real classics from this special group.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Liberty pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has a split top seam, small spine split, ring & edge wear, peel spot on the back cover paste-on at the top.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Art Blakey

In This Korner
Concord, 1978. Very Good
Art Blakey at the Keystone Korner – really rattling the rafters with a great lineup that includes Bobby Watson on alto sax, David Schnitter on tenor, and Valery Ponomarev on trumpet! Although the Shorter/Morgan lineup is always hailed as one of Blakey's best, we're also pretty partial to ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bethlehem, 1957. Very Good+
A well-titled set from Art Blakey – considering the hard-driving sound of the group! The album's one of the best from that unusual year of 1957 – almost a "lost" year for Art, when he was working away from Blue Note with a very different lineup of the Jazz Messengers than on ... Art Blakey

Caravan
Riverside, 1962. Near Mint-
One of the best non-Blue Note sessions from Art Blakey in the 60s – a really searing set that features the sextet lineup of the Jazz Messengers – a group that's filled with legends who include Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Reggie Workman ... Blue Note, 1957. Very Good

Art Blakey

Buhaina's Delight
Blue Note, 1961. Near Mint-
A landmark recording by a whole new chapter in Art Blakey's career! Art Blakey

Moanin'
Blue Note, 1958. Sealed
One of Art Blakey's first true moments of genius! Wayne Shorter

All Seeing Eye
Blue Note, 1965. Sealed
One of the more avant-oriented 60s sessions cut by Wayne Shorter for Blue Note – a record that's not entirely part of the "new thing" generation, but which definitely has Shorter pushing the boundaries from his previous records for the label! The lineup here is a key batch of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Three Sounds

Feelin' Good
Blue Note, Early 60s. Very Good
With a sound like this, these guys have gotta be Feelin Good! The album's one of the first few Blue Notes by Gene Harris and his mighty Three Sounds combo – and is done in the group's very successful blend of soul jazz and piano trio musing – a key shift in styles from the 50s to the ... Cannonball Adderley

Somethin' Else
Blue Note, 1958. Very Good
A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! Jazz Classics – The Beginning & End Of Bop
Blue Note, 1948/1954. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great late 60s album that brings together earlier bop sides recorded for Blue Note – key material from two of the biggest modernists in the early days of the label! Tony Williams

Foreign Intrigue
Blue Note, 1985. Near Mint-
An intriguing little set from drummer Tony Williams – and a set that shows him still very much in command of his talents well into the 80s!
