Other Folks' Music

LP (Item 2720) Atlantic, 1976 — Condition: Very Good+

Rahsaan Roland Kirk takes on "other folks music" – that is, a host of tunes penned by other jazz artists – but as you'd expect, there's a really personal feel to the record overall – one that definitely makes the music Kirk's own by the end of the set! The album's a bit more subdued than some of his previous records, but no less creative – as there's a wonderfully understated quality to the record that really cements its charm – that undeniable Kirk genius at work, amidst an inventive lineup that includes Truty Pitts on electric piano, Hilton Ruiz on acoustic piano, Gloria Agnosti on harp, Richard Williams on trumpet, Roy Haynes on drums – and Roland himself on a great range of reeds – including tenor, flute, manzello, stritchaphone, reed trumpet, and harmonica! Titles include a great reworking of Frank Foster's "Simone", plus versions of Hilton Ruiz' "Arrival" , Trudy Pitts' "Anysha", Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee", and Kirk's own "Water For Robeson & Williams".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a promo sticker and stains on the bottom corners.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk

Return Of The 5000 Lb Man
Warner, 1975. Near Mint-
A beautiful late chapter in the jazz journey of Rahsaan Roland Kirk – and an album of subtle genius that's really opened up to us over the years! The setting here isn't as "hit you over the head" as on some of Kirk's Atlantic Records – because at one level, the tunes are ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rahsaan Roland Kirk

Kirkatron
Warner, 1977. Very Good+
Later genius from Rahsaan Roland Kirk – a record of wonderful depth and soul, and a session that moves back to the straighter jazz focus of some of his work from the Mercury years – yet still keeps all the personality and charm of the best Atlantic sides! Roland's playing in a warm ... LP, Vinyl record album
Warner, 1978. Near Mint-
Roland Kirk's last album – and a return to traditional forms, as might be hinted at by the title! In a way, some of Kirk's later work is similar to that of Mingus – in that both had been pioneering modernists in their earlier years, then turned heavily towards the traditional forms ... Herbie Mann

Latin Fever
Atlantic, 1964. Near Mint-
Herbie Mann's got Latin fever – and it makes for one heck of a great 60s album! The vibe here is more bossa nova than the New York Latin of the time – but that's OK with us, because Mann's flute is perfect in the setting – and really sparkles here on the album's tracks that were ... We constantly find ourselves going back and forth: do we dig the Atlantic Trane, the Impulse Trane, or the Prestige Trane sides more? They each represent significant periods in both his and jazz in general's development, and all are so burning in their own way. This nice compilation brings ... LP, Vinyl record album

Yusef Lateef

10 Years Hence
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A spacious mid 70s set from Yusef Lateef – with some numbers showing his more soaringly spiritual bent – and others hewing towards a more bluesy or loosely funky vein. Tracked live in San Francisco, some numbers were later augmented with overdubbed strings and vocals – there's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington

Great Paris Concert
Atlantic, 1963. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Did Ellington ever record in concert and it not be great? This wonderful double-length set from the 60s is key proof of his genius in an unfettered live setting – recorded in Paris in 1963 with plenty of dark edges! The tracks are short overall, but Duke's really at the head of the group on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wild and wonderful work by Keith Jarrett – light years away from his records on ECM! Modern Jazz Quartet

Sheriff
Atlantic, 1963. Near Mint-
A moody early 60s set by the MJQ for Atlantic. Overall the group rolls and swings in a bit rougher mode than they do on their brighter efforts, but they still hit the sweet spot and swing when the mood fits! The record works best when Milt Jackson's vibes are let loose, as on the playful reading ... LP, Vinyl record album

The MJQ always manage to sound especially great when working on music for film – and this album's a great illustration of that fact! The work here is written by John Lewis, for a movie that never lasted the test of time as much as the record – and it's some of John's most evocative ... LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent double LP set that brings together all of the material from Lennie's classic Atlantic LPs – Lennie Tristano and The New Tristano.
