Soul Artistry

LP (Item 27108) Mercury, 1967 — Condition: Very Good+
Beautiful uptown soul from Jerry – with pre Gamble-Huff arrangements by Jo Renzetti and Jimmy Wisner. The tracks do a great job of maintaining the perfect Iceman sound from Jerry's late Vee Jay years, yet also hint nicely at the direction to come. Titles include "You Walked Into My Life", "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me", "Some Kind Of Magic", "The Way Of Love", and "Why Did I Lose You".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Red label stereo pressing. Cover has a cutout hole, tiny split on the bottom seam.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good+
A beautiful early record from Jerry Butler – filled with some lesser-known gems from his Vee Jay years, all sung in that fantastic Iceman style! There's a real hint of sadness here – and tracks like "You Go Right Through Me", "The Challenge", "If You Let ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler

Power Of Love
Mercury, 1973. Near Mint-
An easy album to overlook, but not without some nice moments! Johnny Bristol produced the record, and he gives it a nice sweet 70s soul groove, similar to what he was using in his own work from the time. And typical of Jerry's albums from the early 70s, there's lots of nice original material, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler

Sweet Sixteen
Mercury, 1974. Very Good+
A lost little gem from Jerry – recorded towards the end of his years with Mercury. The record's got Jerry working in a much hipper style than before, drawing off the pool of younger Chicago soul talents that he'd begun to collect on some of his earlier albums for Mercury – and the ... Mercury, 1983. Very Good+
One of the last great pop records from Donna Summer – thanks to super huge radio and video play for the title cut – and to a huge amount of tuneful tracks put together by producer/arranger Michael Omartin! By this point, Summer isn't trying to fool anyone that she's a deeper soul ... LP, Vinyl record album

The great Chuck Berry was still going strong long after leaving Chess Records – using his time at Mercury in the late 60s to really open up, and continue to evolve his craft – as you'll hear in in this double length set that includes a concert at the Fillmore with the Steve Miller Band! Ohio Players

Skin Tight
Mercury, 1974. Very Good- Gatefold
Great work from the Ohio Players – and proof that moving to a big label could be a good thing for a funky group! This was the band's first album for Mercury – and although one might have the temptation to say that the label cut down the radical funk sound of the trippy Westbound years, ... Bar-Kays

As One
Mercury, 1980. Near Mint-
The Bar-Kays definitely groove as one on this tight little set – with amazing choppy guitar, bumping basslines, and brassy horns – all wrapped up with some wonderfully warm production! The group have come a long way from their fuzzier funk roots by this time, but they're still sounding ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chi-Lites

Happy Being Lonely
Mercury, 1976. Very Good+
Beautiful beautiful work from The Chi-Lites – and a record that we might even say tops the best of their late Brunswick book! Despite the move from that label to Mercury, the group have a sound here that's still wonderfully fragile and harmony-focused – especially on the mellower cuts, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ivory Joe Hunter

Since I Met You Baby
Mercury, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
A fantastic collection of work from the MGM years of Ivory Joe Hunter – music that mixes blues roots with a touch of jazz, and also points the way towards country soul to come in the 60s – a strong precursor of work from Joe Tex, Solomon Burke, and others. LP, Vinyl record album

Con Funk Shun

Touch
Mercury, 1980. Very Good+
A killer from Con Funk Shun – one of the few mainstream funk groups who actually managed to sound better and better with each new record – and on this set, they really seem to come into their own! The group's sound was always suited better to a smoother groove than a rougher one – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ohio Players

Fire
Mercury, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the biggest albums ever for Ohio Players – a set that took their earlier funk sound and targeted firmly at the mainstream with a lean, mean groove that a million other groups copied at the time! There's still plenty of the soul of the early years in the group's approach here – ... LP, Vinyl record album
