Seminal early funk work from Roy Ayers! The record catches him at that perfect point when he was turning from a straight jazz player into a sinister force in 70s funk – and the group on the session includes super-hip soul jazz giants like Charles Tolliver, Sonny Fortune, and Harry Whitaker, ... A fantastic record – one of Birdsong's rare early ones, with a messed-up approach to funk that he rarely matched again! The album was cut at the time Birdsong was working with Roy Ayers – but it was produced by Birdsong himself, and he also handled all the keyboards on the set. The ... LP, Vinyl record album
An excellent album of fusion-inspired soul – recorded for Wayne Henderson's At-Home productions, and done with a jazzy vibe that's simply tremendous! The album features some really great work by by Bobby Lyle and Roland Bautista – and at some level, the whole thing's got a sound that's ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of the coolest club projects of the 70s – a set of tracks based around the keyboards of Don Ray, but handled with lots of electronic disco touches from Cerrone! The pair are great arrangers on their own, but together they really make some magic – kind of a leaner take on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ellen's certainly not a soul artist – but she's got a particularly soulful approach to folk rock – one that's made her a favorite of groovers worldwide in the past few decades, thanks to a big push from Gilles Peterson, and the club scene ... A killer debut from Rasputin Stash – a funky group who work with all the long-haired inspiration you'd expect from their name! The groove is a mix of guitars and tight horns – undercut by the kind of heavy basslines that later made the group a good fit for Curtom Records, and lots of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Gil Scott Heron's first album for Arista – very much in the mellow soul jazz work of his legendary album on Strata East! The record features some wonderfully moody jazz backing that really marks a shift in Gil's style – never going too far over the top, but hitting a sweet groove that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Funky instrumentals – with James on organ, grooving hard in a raw 60s R&B mode! Lots of the tracks are versions of James' big 60s hits – like "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag (parts 1 & 2)", "Try Me", and "Out of Sight" – but there are also some ... LP, Vinyl record album
