Shape Of Jazz To Come

LP (Item 2688) Atlantic, 1959 — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

LP

An album that certainly lives up to the promise of its title – as it's filled with amazing instrumentation, groundbreaking compositions, and a sound in jazz that few ears could imagine at the time! The groove here is extremely modal – all instruments rolling along on the same rhythmic pulse, with drums, bass, trumpet, and alto sax incredibly intertwined! Ornette's really got an edge on his instrument – cutting even more deeply here than the clipped, punctuated cornet work of Don Cherry – and the rhythm team of Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins are simply amazing – not just keeping up with the energy of Ornette, but also really helping facilitate it as well! Titles include the haunting "Lonely Woman", plus "Peace", "Chronology", and "Focus on Sanity". (Red & green label pressing.)  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Caravan Of Dreams, 1987. Sealed 2LP Gatefold
2 LP set of material from the mid 80's – one featuring Ornette reunited with his classic quartet of Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgins; the other with his Prime Time group that included Bern Nix, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and Denardo Coleman. Stating The Case
Jazz Anthology (France), Early 60s. Near Mint-
Live early 60s recording of Ornette, without the sidemen listed. The vibe here is pretty wide open, even for Ornette, where the group seems to be taking off on fully improvised material, without the themes and structures in some of Ornette's other work. The setting seems to vary from multiple ... LP, Vinyl record album

Artists House, 1979. Very Good Gatefold
One of Ornette's great albums for the obscure Artists House label, and different from the one that he recorded with James Blood Ulmer, which was more of a straight-on Harmelodic work. This one's got him playing a set of tender sensitive duets with bassist and longtime accompanyist Charlie Haden. ... LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful record that serves as both a showcase for Ornette's "serious" writing efforts, and his ability to play with a larger ensemble. Side one features Ornette playing trumpet solos with The Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet as they perform his "Forms & Sounds". Side two ... LP, Vinyl record album

Improvising Artists Inc, 1958. Near Mint-
Fantastic material from the late 50s – recorded live, possibly at the same Hillcrest Club sessions that yielded the material on the Fabulous Paul Bley album issued in France. The set's pure Coleman, but with a twist. Bley's comping on piano gives the record more of a straight jazz groove ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chappaqua Suite
Columbia, 1966. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of Ornette Coleman's most groundbreaking albums – a set that takes his best free jazz energy of the 60s, and expands it out into the space of a longer suite – all originally designed as a film soundtrack, then never used in the movie at all! Yet even without the film placement, the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1966. Very Good+
One of our favorite Ornette Coleman albums of the post-Atlantic 60s years – a set that still hangs onto some of the bold rhythmic conception of his previous records, but also points the way towards his freer jazz modes to come! The group's a trio – with really tremendous work from ... LP, Vinyl record album

Something Else!!!!
Contemporary, 1958. Near Mint-
Pre-Atlantic work from Ornette Coleman – one of his first recorded statements in jazz – and one of his boldest! At some level, the complete Coleman sound isn't entirely in place here – as there's a bit of a trace of hardbop in the mix – not entirely, but just a bit. But at ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impulse, 1969. Good+ Gatefold
Excellent Impulse set by Ornette that's devilishly hard to find these days! A landmark album from this legendary Chicago soul jazz combo – and a record that helped set the tone for changes to come in funky jazz for the 70s! Jazz Modes
Atlantic, 1959. Near Mint-
One of the rarest albums by this fantastic combo from the late 50s! The sound shouldn't work, but it does, and beautifully – ... LP, Vinyl record album

After Hours
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good+
After Hours is the time when Crawford really hits his stride – playing lean and mellow in that easy soulful way that always seemed to work better than any of his other approaches to jazz.
