cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.
LA bebop jam session material, featuring two long tracks recorded live in the city of angels! The sides give us a great picture of the kind of lively cutting jam sessions that were ripping through the Central Ave scene of the old days. Players include Dexter Gordon, Sonny Criss, Hampton Hawes, ... LP, Vinyl record album
The pair of great pianists don't play together – but are featured on a side apiece of the record, pulled from their Savoy recordings of the 50s. The album's most notable for the work of Nichols – some of the few sides he ever cut, and along with his two Blue Note LPs, and one for ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ouch, what a terrible title – and for such a nice album! The record brings together sides recorded by Frank Wess and Frank Foster for the Savoy label in 1956 and 1957 – laidback hardbop tunes that have both players working in easy-going company, with the feel of a late 50s Prestige ... One of the few albums ever cut as a leader by trumpeter Bill Hardman – an excellent talent who's probably known best for his late 50s work with Art Blakey in the Jazz Messengers! The group's a strong batch of hard-edged soulful players – a quintet that includes Ronnie Matthews on piano ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of a few albums cut in America by French 50s modernist Andre Hodeir – a set of compositions arranged and conducted by Hodeir himself, featuring American players that include Idrees Sulieman and Donald Byrd on trumpets, Hal McKusick on alto and bass clarinet, Bobby Jaspar on tenor and ... James Brown's old funky reed player hits wax in this groovy solo set of his own – playing here with a sound that's a bit more produced than usual, and with more of a 70's groove than you're used to hearing him in. His tone is perfect, as always, and the record is arranged and conducted by ... LP, Vinyl record album
A classic session of modernist jazz – and some of Mingus most groundbreaking early work! The album was recorded for Savoy with 2 different groups – one's got Mingus leading John LaPorta on alto, Teo Macero on tenor, and Mal Waldron on piano, and the other group's a quartet with Macero, ... One of the few albums issued under the name of bassist Slam Stewart – and a great testament to the genius of the player on his instrument in the days after his work with Slim Gaillard! The style here is much straighter jazz than Slam's work with Slim – and the numbers are mostly in a ... LP, Vinyl record album
An interesting piece of modernist jazz – recorded by a quartet that features vibist Jack Brokensha, in a lineup that includes piano, bass, and drums. Brokenshaw's originally an Australian player, but he's working here with a group that he hooked up with in Detroit, where he was working ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sharp-edged early bop material from a very hip sextet – one that features both Howard McGhee on trumpet and Milt Jackson on vibes – plus a very young Jimmy Heath on alto and baritone sax! LP, Vinyl record album
