Cal Tjader Plays Harold Arlen

LP (Item 26805) Fantasy, Early 60s — Condition: Near Mint-
A slightly different vibe than some of the Cal Tjader Latin sets for Fantasy – but a great record that features early arrangements from the mighty Clare Fischer! Titles include "Ill Wind", "When The Sun Comes Out", "Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea", "Out Of This World", and "The Man That Got Away".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s OJC pressing on red vinyl.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Cal Tjader

San Francisco Moods
Fantasy, Early 60s. Near Mint-
A nice album of lyrical groovers by this master vibist – played with more of a jazz feel than Cal's 60's Latin sessions – and it's based around a nice set of original tracks dedicated to San Francisco. Bay Area guitar legend Eddie Duran plays with Cal's group on the session, and titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader

West Side Story
Fantasy, Early 60s. Very Good+
A really great reading of the West Side Story score – one that's better than most of the other ones floating around from the time! Of course, part of the reason for that is because the session's got some super-hip scoring from the great Clare Fischer – just starting out here, but doing ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1958. Very Good
One of Cal Tjader's best late 50s dates for Fantasy Records – thanks to some smoking tenor sax from Jose "Chombo" Silva! The album has Cal working in the very comfortable territory of San Francisco's Blackhawk Nightclub – in a combo that also features familiar players Vince ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader

Warm Wave
Verve, 1964. Very Good Gatefold
A mighty nice pairing – the vibes of Cal Tjader and the sophisticated arrangements of Claus Ogerman – who definitely ensures that the album's the warm wave promised in the title! Cal Tjader

Soul Sauce
Verve, 1964. Very Good+
Arguably THE classic Cal Tjader album of the 60s – a landmark album that crossed over equally into Latin, jazz, and mainstream audiences – and a stone cooker that's filled with smoking little grooves! The set's probably best known for its title track "Soul Sauce" – one ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, Mid 1960s. Very Good+
After the huge success of Cal's hit "Soul Sauce" for Verve, Fantasy put together this greatest hits compilation based around the tune "Wachi Wara", which Cal had recorded for them previously, and which had the same basic sound and style as "Soul Sauce" (which uses the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Best Of Cal Tjader
Verve, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Cal cut so many great sides for Verve during the 60s, it's hard to imagine how anyone could come up with a "best of" – but this album fits the bill nicely, and includes a number of solid groover and Latin jazz tracks that fit just right! Includes "Sake & Greens", ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1954. Very Good
A lean, and nicely spare mid 50s set by vibes player Norvo, with bassist Red Mitchell, and Jimmy Raney on guitar. Red's vibes are way up front on most of the tracks, but leave plenty of space for the other players to shine. 8 tracks in all: "Can't We Be Friends", "Blues For ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley Turrentine

West Side Highway
Fantasy, 1977. Near Mint-
Full funky work from the great Stanley Turrentine – an album that has him blowing beautifully over larger backings arranged and conducted by Claus Ogerman! Claus is a bit more fluid here than usual – still using a fairly orchestral approach to the record, but also bringing in some of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freddie Hubbard

Little Night Music
Fantasy, 1983. Near Mint-
A smoking little set from Freddie Hubbard, recorded during his great back-to-basics years of the early 80s! The tracks here are all quite long, and informed by a strong sense of hardbop – but they also open up with some sharper, more modern moments at times – of the sort that keenly ... Fantasy, Early 50s. Very Good+
Really great early work from Dave Brubeck – recorded with his early trio that included Cal Tjader on both drums and vibes – instruments he'd sometimes play on the same track! Cal's so young here, the notes are billing him as "Callen Tjader" on the label – and the rest ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1950. Very Good+
Amazing work from the young Dave Brubeck – tunes that are definitely distinctive, given his fresh modern approach to the music! The group's an octet, with Paul Desmond on alto – and titles include Brubeck arrangements of "Let's Fall In Love", "Love Walked In", " ... LP, Vinyl record album
